Police release names from Wood County shooting
VIENNA, W.Va. -- Police released the name of the man they shot and killed Tuesday following an attempted robbery in Wood County.
Steven Lewis Pfalzgraf, 24, of Parkersburg, tried to use his vehicle to run over a Parkersburg police officer, according to State Police Sgt. Michael Baylous. Police shot him.
Just before 1 p.m., two officers responded to a report of a purse snatching inside the food court at the Grand Central Mall in Vienna.
Pfalzgraf, along with husband and wife John and Jenna Ragalyi, both of New Matamoras, Ohio, fled the mall after John Ragalyi stole a woman's purse, Baylous said. Baylous didn't know how old the Ragalyis are.
One officer got pinned beside the vehicle and dragged several feet, according to Baylous. After that officer freed himself, Pfalzgraf steered the vehicle toward another officer, according to Baylous, "in an attempt to run him over."
"The officer had to respond to the threat," Baylous said. "[Pfalzgraf] tried to use the car as a weapon."
Baylous said he didn't believe Pfalzgraf or the Ragalyis had a weapon.
The shooting happened in the parking lot outside of the food court, Baylous said. Original reports said it happened outside of Toys R Us, however, that's where Pfalzgraf's car ended up after the shooting, Baylous said.
The Ragalyis fled on foot, but turned themselves into police Tuesday evening. Police were discussing possible charges with the county's prosecutor on Wednesday morning, according to Baylous.
Parkersburg Police Chief Joseph Martin said Tuesday one officer received minor injuries, including a strained arm. Martin would not identify the officers involved.
