Nicholas County man froze to death after car caught fire, police say
Muddlety, W.Va. -- A Nicholas County man apparently froze to death after his car caught fire, leaving him stranded along an unfamiliar road, police said.
Dana Carte, 79, of Birch River, had climbed into a makeshift tree stand, where a passerby discovered his body on Friday morning, said Nicholas County Sheriff David Hopkins in a news release. Carte's family reported him missing on Monday.
It appeared Carte took a wrong turn off Route 19, driving five miles up a rural road behind the State Department of Highways garage in Muddlety. It looks like Carte's car got struck in the snow and then caught fire as he tried to free it, according to the release. Carte abandoned the vehicle and climbed into a tree stand more than a mile from where he was stranded. A towing company shop found the car earlier this week.
