Ellen DeGeneres returns to host the Oscars for a second time. The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and televised live on the ABC Television Network.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- At least two local Oscar Night events offer the chance to celebrate the Academy Awards with a little pomp and circumstance thrown in this Sunday night.The 10th Annual Children's Therapy Clinic
"A Night With the Stars" Oscar Gala takes place at Embassy Suites Hotel, featuring a live big-screen broadcast of the awards. This fundraiser for the clinic features a Hollywood atmosphere with a red carpet entrance, hor d'oeurves, legal beverages, deserts and contests, including a costume contest, and Predict the Winners and Oscar Trivia contests. Doors open at 6:30 p.m."It's one of our three main fundraisers," said Valicia Leary, Children's Therapy Clinic executive director. "The guests can sit at the table and enjoy the food and watch the Oscars on three larges screens in the Embassy Suites ballroom."We also have a costume contest if people would like to come dressed as one of their favorite characters from one of this year's movies or as a famous actor or actress."It's a great girls' night out or date night. It's a fun event to watch the Oscars along with everyone in Hollywood. I think it's a fun evening for anyone who enjoys watching the Academy Awards. I actually started this as an event in my home with sister in law -- so we started that 10 years ago and it has steadily grown each year."The event also includes a silent auction that will offer gift certificates for local restaurants, stores and spas, golf packages, movie passes, weekend getaways and art. Also on auction will be a guitar that was presented as an award to songwriter Jeff Stevens and country singer Luke Bryan for the No. 1 song "Someone Else Calling You Baby." The guitar is autographed by both Bryan and Stevens.The evening will also honor Peg Henrich, a former board member who was also executive director of the clinic for a period.The Children's Theraphy Clinic is a private, non-profit organization that provides therapy services -- speech, occupational and physical therapies and autism socialization program -- to children with special needs who have inadequate insurance and/or income.
Individual tickets are $100 in advance of $125 at the door with tables for 10 available for $900.Meanwhile, the West Virginia International Film Festival
will host an Oscar party at the Upstairs Lounge at Little India Restaurant, 1604 Washington St. E.As part of a $10 admission, guests can watch the Academy Awards on a big-screen TV and match their Oscar picks against the Academy's in a movie lover's version of March madness brackets. Prizes will be awarded for not only the most accurate, but the least accurate bracket.A "not-too-serious" fashion contest will features such categories as "Most Glamorous" (best dressed) to "Most Derelict" (worst dressed). The night includes free refreshments and a spin-jockey for commercial breaks."This should be a nice relaxing way to end the week and a little more fun than just watching [The Oscars] on your home set," said Emmett Pepper, president of the film festival.People who want to enter their Oscar picks need to get their entries in by 7:30 p.m. (The event begins at 6 p.m.)The $10 admission will help the film festival continue its work of helping "bring films to the area that don't normally get to play here," Pepper said. "We're looking to build upon the successes we continue to have to and to continue to bring interesting, thought-provoking films to the area."
