TECH BASEBALL: WVU Tech lost a couple of games to Rio Grande 12-5 and 9-6 Saturday at Bob Evans Field in Rio Grande, Ohio.In game one, Mark Parent went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs for the Red Storm (18-9). Ryan Robertson got the win, giving up five runs on six hits in 61/3 innings. For the Golden Bears (13-9), Jose Soto was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and starter Taylor Carter was handed the loss.Rio Grande's Shane Spies was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in game two, while Donson Dearth got the win in middle relief. Marc Culmer went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Tech and Brad Boles gave up two runs on one hit in one-third of an inning for the loss.
WVU BASEBALL: West Virginia swept a doubleheader Saturday from Manhattan at Hawley Field in Morgantown. The Mountaineers won 2-0 in the first game and 7-6 in the nightcap.In the opener, Marshall Thompson allowed two hits in six innings for WVU. Matt Frazer went 2-for-3 for the Mountaineers while Chris Rasky and Nate Antone each had an RBI.In the second game, Ryan McBroom drove in two as West Virginia used a four-run eighth inning to take the lead. Austin Pressly picked up the win for Mountaineers (10-10) with a scoreless eighth inning, while Ryan Tezak earned his fourth save of the year.
OTHER WVU SPORTS: The WVU women's 800 freestyle swimming relay team finished 16th at the NCAA championships Saturday in Auburn, Ala. Mandie Nugent finished 36th in the 100 fly, while Rachel Burnett was 51st in the 200 free.n WVU pole vaulter Katlyn Shelar set a school record Friday at the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, N.C. Shelar cleared 3.95 meters, breaking the 3.86 mark set by Kristin Quackenbush in 1998. Hammer thrower Terina Miller qualified for the regional with a toss of 54.98 meters for the Mountaineers.
UC SPORTS: Emily Fultz surrendered four hits and struck out nine as Charleston shut out Bowie State 5-0 Saturday in Salem, Va. Micki Murzynski went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Golden Eagles (12-10) while Logan Tretick added a solo home run.n The UC women's rowing varsity eight won its division at the Augusta Invitational Regatta Saturday in Aiken, S.C. The Golden Eagles finished the 2,000-meter course in a time of 7 minutes, 28 seconds. Charleston place third overall in the collegiate point standings behind Washington University and the College of Charleston.
BACF BASKETBALL: The 11th annual Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis Ohio vs. West Virginia Basketball Classic will be held April 6 at Parkersburg South High School. The game pits senior players from the Mid-Ohio Valley. The girls game tips off at 6 p.m., while the boys game starts at 8.
