Butler lands GA spot on WVU staff

It may or may not mark the end of his playing days, but Da'Sean Butler is at least taking a sabbatical.

After undergoing his third knee surgery in two years, the former West Virginia basketball star has landed a spot as a graduate assistant coach this season at his alma mater.

"We are excited to have [Butler] on as our GA. He will be a great example to our young guys,'' coach Bob Huggins said via Twitter Friday. "Few have embodied the Mountaineer spirit better than Da.''

Butler is West Virginia's third all-time leading scorer and led the Mountaineers to their first Final Four appearance in more than 50 years in 2010. But he suffered a major knee injury in the closing minutes of his final game, a national semifinal loss to Duke.

Butler had surgery on the knee, but was still drafted by the Miami Heat. He was cut, though, and after missing the 2010-11 season played in the NBA Developmental League last season. That came after a second knee surgery. He averaged about 11 points for the Austin Toros.

Butler recently had a third surgery on the same knee.
