CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck and first-year baseball Coach Randy Mazey took in a minor league baseball game at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. The Mountaineers' A.D. and the man he hand-picked to run the baseball program could look down from their suite to the park WVU will call home nine times in 2013. Luck and West Virginia Power Executive Vice President Andy Milovich announced Tuesday that West Virginia will play three Big 12 series at the Charleston ballpark in the Mountaineers' first trip through their new league."We're very excited about the opportunity to play in such a beautiful facility," Luck said from his Power Park suite. "We've had some marvelous experiences playing here. It's going to be a great opportunity for our program.
"As the state's flagship university, it's important for us to get back to the state's largest city."And the arrangement brings some marquee matchups to the 4,500-seat stadium. The Mountaineers will play Texas Tech (March 22-24), Oklahoma (May 3-5) and TCU (May 10-12).TCU, like WVU, is in its first season of Big 12 competition and is where Mazey worked previously as an assistant baseball coach.
Mazey was hired in June to replace Greg Van Zant.Mazey, 46, has barely gotten acclimated to his new program."I don't recognize a lot of (the players) because I'm just meeting them for the first time," he said. "We're in our first meeting and I'm looking around and there's still some names I don't really know."We haven't really gotten started yet."But, Mazey has gotten a feel for WVU's fervent fan base in his brief three months on the job. That, he said, makes playing at Power Park appealing."One thing I've learned about being at WVU so far is there's Mountaineer fans all over the state," he said. "This is the biggest city in the state and we want to capitalize on that and bring some really good baseball to the park."It'll be great competition, a great level of college baseball and hopefully all the Mountaineer fans will support us and fill every seat."
A location for a fourth Big 12 Conference home series against Kansas from April 26-28 will be announced at a later date.
