West Virginia pitcher Mike Jefferson allowed no hits through five innings and the Power ended a three-game losing streak by beating Charleston 7-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday.Jefferson (7-7) pitched six innings, allowing one hit (a Francisco Arcia home run) while striking out four to get the win for the Power.Gregory Polanco hit his 16th home run for West Virginia (35-31), finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Alen Hanson (2 for 3, RBI) and Taylor Lewis (2 for 4, two RBIs) also had multiple hits for the Power.In the first game of the doubleheader - a completion of Wednesday's suspended game - West Virginia did not get a hit until the seventh inning in a 7-2 loss to the RiverDogs.
The Power's Pat Ludwig (0-1) took the loss in the seven-inning contest as the RiverDogs scored twice in the fifth inning and five times in the sixth.
West Virginia, which now trails Hagerstown by 41/2 games in the South Atlantic League North Division second-half standings, returns home today for the start of a season-ending four-game series against Delmarva.nn
TECH SOCCER: The WVU Tech women's team lost 3-2 in overtime to Shawnee State University. The Golden Bears (0-3) took an early lead with a goal by senior Hannah Pilcher. Shawnee retaliated with two goals of its own before Creshana Jones equalized for WVU Tech. Aubrey Johnson scored the game-winning goal for Shawnee State in OT.nn
WVSU TENNIS: The West Virginia State women's team is hosting a "Meet the Team" fundraiser at the school's tennis courts Monday. The cost is $20 and includes refreshments, door prizes and tennis with the team.
