Roundup: Berner, Evans, Westfall, Davis advance in match play event
Edgewood's Craig Berner, Barry Evans of Berry Hills, Brad Westfall from Tygart Lake and Scott Davis, a PGA professional from Hurricane, have advanced to the third round of the Callaway Gold Match Play Championship at Shannopin Country Club in Pittsburgh.
Berner earned victories Tuesday over Tom Bummer (3 and 1) and Frank Blazewick (3 and 2), while Evans knocked off Korre Madden (2 and 1) and Dennis Dolci (1 up).
Westfall notched wins over Drew Bohn (7 and 6) and Jody Barrett (3 and 2), and Davis secured victories over Bob Salera (6 and 5) and John Aubrey (3 and 2).
Jonathan Clark of Sleepy Hollow Country Club earned a win over Matt Felber (5 and 4), but fell in the second round to Tony Traci (19 holes).
The quarterfinal round begins today at 8 a.m.
MU SOCCER: Matt Freeman of the Marshall men's soccer team has earned Conference USA defensive player of the week honors. Freeman played a key role in keeping opponents from scoring during the Herd's three-game shutout streak. Freeman also notched an assist on Eddy Prugh's game-winning goal in Marshall's 1-0 win over IPFW on Monday.
UC SOCCER: Coming off a 2-1 win over then No. 4 Millersville on Thursday, the University of Charleston men's team has jumped to No. 12 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. UC also takes over the top ranking in the Atlantic Regional poll.
TECH SOCCER: Rodrigo Manzanares scored a pair of goals as the WVU Tech men's team downed Point Park (Pa.) 3-1 Tuesday at Schoenbaum Stadium in Charleston.
Senior Joe Jackson added a goal for the Golden Bears (2-0). Frances Tabi scored the lone goal for Point Park (0-1), converting a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
WVU ROWING: Conference USA has agreed to an affiliate membership with West Virginia University for women's rowing, effective this season. WVU and Old Dominion, which will join the league as a full member in 2013, will be competing for the 2013 championship in the spring.
