John Duty Sr. of Hurricane picked up his first West Virginia Senior Series win of the year Tuesday at Sugarwood Golf Club in Lavalette, shooting a 1-over-par 72 to edge out Spencer's Rick Moore in a card-off.Hurricane's Harold Payne rounded out the top three in the Senior Division with a 75, while Mineral Wells' Jim Mason won the Silver Division at 2-over-par. PREP GOLF: Inclement weather forced the Putnam County high school golf championship to be pushed back from Tuesday to Thursday. Poca coach Doug Smith said rain in the forecast forced Putnam County's four high school's to reschedule the event, which will take place at Scarlet Oaks Golf Course in Poca.
WVU SPORTS: West Virginia's Kate Schwindel has earned Big 12 soccer weekly accolades for games played from Sept. 14-16. Schwindel totaled three goals and four assists in WVU's final two non-conference matches. She leads the team in goals (seven), assists (four) and points (18).Schwindel also picked up Eastern College Athletic Conference soccer player of the week honors.Eric Schoenle of the West Virginia men's soccer team is one of 30 candidates for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.Schoenle has played 65 matches, all starts, and has scored 10 goals with five assists.The West Virginia women's cross country team has maintained the national ranking of No. 25 in this week's USTFCCCA National Division I poll. The Mountaineers are also ranked No. 5 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
WVU is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Penn State Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 8,where the Mountaineers had four runners finish in the top 25.The West Virginia women's basketball team will play five Big 12 conference games that will be telecasted on Fox Sports Net.
WVU will travel to Kansas State on Jan. 13 (3 p.m.), host Oklahoma on Feb. 3 (12 noon), and head to Kansas on Feb. 9 (2 p.m.). The Mountaineers will go to Iowa State Feb. 17 (12:30 p.m.) before finishing up by hosting Baylor March 2 (6 p.m.).nn
MU SPORTS: Marshall's women's golf team wrapped up play Tuesday at the Dale McNamara Invitational in 15th place with a three-round score of 959.The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the par-72 Golf Club of Oklahoma in Broken Arrow, Okla. The top MU golfer throughout the tournament was Samantha DiDomenico with an overall 54-hole score of 230 (14 over par). She finished in a tie for 41st with rounds of 78-76-76.Former Marshall softball players Rachel Folden and Amanda Williams will compete as part of the 12-person roster that will play against Marshall Tuesday in the National Pro Fastpitch Back to School Tour at Appalachian Power Park.
The exhibition will pit the current Thundering Herd softball team against an experienced NPF roster that features national champions and former Olympians. First pitch is at 7:30 p.m.nn
WVC AWARDS: The University of Charleston's Debbie Amos has been named West Virginia Conference women's cross country runner of the week. Amos notched a 13th-place effort at the Virginia Tech Invitational last Friday, covering the 6K course in 22:44.02.
For the second time this season, Concord's Robby Peters has been named the West Virginia Conference men's cross country runner of the week. Peters took home a fourth-place effort at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday, crossing the line in a personal-best time of 25:11.
