Roundup: Shepherd baseball coach Riser leaves for another job

Shepherd University baseball coach Wayne Riser has left the program to become the baseball coach at University of Mary Washington in Fredricksburg, Va.Riser has been the head coach at Shepherd since 1991, has amassed a record of 509-395-2 and is the all-time winningest coach in any sport at Shepherd. The Rams won three West Virginia Conference titles (2004, 2009, 2012) and 10 conference Northern Division crowns under Riser.His teams made NCAA II regional appearances in 1997, 2002, 2006, 2009, and 2012.

  •  WVU SPORTS: The No. 25-ranked West Virginia women's cross country team finished 11th at the Toledo Inter-Regional Bubble Buster Friday in Toledo, Ohio. The Mountaineers finished with 334 points, while Butler won the event after having three runners finish in the top 10. San Francisco took second with 86 points. Freshman Sydney Scott was WVU's top finisher with a 4K time of 14:00.4. Redshirt senior Aubrey Moskal was the second Mountaineer to cross the line in 14:17.1.
  • Frances Silva scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 79th minute to lead West Virginia past visiting Texas Tech 3-2 Friday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.  The win gave West Virginia its first victory as a member of the Big 12 Conference. Mallory Smith netted the other WVU goal (5-3-3) while Morgan Johnson and Paige Strahan tallied one goal apiece for the Red Raiders (7-3-0).

  • MU SOCCER: The Marshall women's team fell to Colorado College 2-1 Friday night at Cabell Midland High School. Senior forward Chelsey Maiden gave the Herd (4-5) the early lead when she scored her third goal of the season in the fifth minute. Colorado College's Jessie Ayers tied the game at 1-1 in the 64th minute and Ayers scored the eventual game-winner less than 16 minutes later.
