4th-quarter TD lifts Point past Winfield 18-13

WINFIELD - The Big Blacks of Point Pleasant continued their roll toward a playoff spot in Class AAA with an exciting 18-13 win over an improving Winfield team Friday night. The Big Blacks, last year's AA runners-up, used a very deliberate running game, but needed a big play in the final 4:45 to overcome a 13-12 General lead.Sophomore quarterback Aden Yates found senior running back Anthony Perry on a 42-yard pass down the middle of the General defense that set up the winning run from 28 yards out by Yates. "We've got a very young team and games like these build maturity in our players. We were fortunate enough to get the ball toward the end and make the big play that got us close enough to score," said Point coach David Darst. "Winfield is getting better and our schedule will get tougher in the coming weeks as we play these bigger AAA teams.''Winfield, coming off a comeback overtime win against Riverside last week, could not get featured running back senior Seth Lewis into the flow as he was held to 71 yards on 12 carries. The Generals had to rely on the passing of junior quarterback Toby Show to receivers Kris Turner and John Hathaway to move downfield against a stingy Big Black defense.
"We had receivers open but were just out of reach on some of Toby's passes," said Generals coach Craig Snyder. "Our defense keeps stepping up each week but this week we gave up the big play in the end that cost us."The first half saw a defensive struggle as the Big Blacks (4-0) managed a 2-yard TD run by Yates at the end of the first quarter. Winfield was able to score on a 21-yard pass from Show to Turner, who outran the Big Black defense and was all alone in the back of the end zone halfway through the second quarter to put his team up 7-6.Both teams maintained their defensive efforts in a scoreless third quarter. However, the fourth quarter saw both teams trading scoring drives until the final Big Blacks drive to win it."They made some adjustments at halftime that caught us off guard a little there in the second half," Snyder said. "They were able to move the ball a little better and we couldn't get the stops we needed." For the Big Blacks, junior tailback Teran Barnitz carried 13 times for 63 yards.
