WINFIELD - Logan, needing a win over a Class AAA opponent to boost its chances of a return to the playoffs, came through with a hard-fought 38-28 road win over a game Winfield team playing in front of a large homecoming crowd. The Wildcats (5-1), using a ball-control offense and the passing of senior quarterback Chris Marcum, matched with a "bend but don't break" defensive effort on a muddy field, came away with the much-needed win in a penalty-marred game."Everything went our way in the first half and everything went their way in the second half," said Logan coach Gary Mullins. "We're glad to be 5-1 and we'll try to get Hurricane in two weeks."We play hard every down and try to get after it. I feel like we did that tonight."Logan led off the scoring with a touchdown on its opening drive when Marcum found Khaleel Reynolds on a pass from 7 yards out. After a three-and-out by the Generals, Marcum again hooked up with Reynolds for an 87-yard score on the next series, giving the Wildcats a 12-0 lead.
"We made some mistakes in the secondary tonight but my kids play hard and I'm very proud of them," said Winfield coach Craig Snyder. The Generals appeared ready to rally in the second half when they scored on their opening drive with a 5-yard Seth Lewis run to close within 32-14.They would score again later halfway through the fourth quarter on a 12-yard pass from Toby Show to John Hathaway to get within 38-28. But the Wildcats used ball control, gaining enough first downs on the ground with the running of junior tailback Worm Street to run out the clock."We fought very hard in the second half and we'll figure out how to put it all together," said Snyder. For the Generals, Show threw for 175 yards but the offense was marred by key penalties and breakdowns in execution with four interceptions. Lewis was held to 22 yards on 13 carries. For Logan, Marcum was very effective, passing for 337 yards to five different receivers.
