Roundup: West Virginia State to add five to Sports Hall of Fame
Five former West Virginia State athletes and an award-winning coach will be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 6 in the Wilson University Union.
The new "W" Club Sports Hall of Fame members are Debra Anderson-Conliff (basketball); Craig Carse (basketball coach); Phillip Hill (swimming and diving); Tyrone Taylor (posthumous - track); Keith O. Wade (basketball); and Phillip Wilson (track and field). They will also be recognized during halftime at the homecoming football game later that day.
UC SOCCER: Elyse Surbaugh netted the game-winning goal in the 36th minute as the University of Charleston women's team earned a 2-0 win over Cedarville Saturday at Trace Fork. Holly Bigg added an insurance goal just before halftime on a cross from the corner by Surbaugh. Courtney Budd made nine saves in goal for the Golden Eagles (4-5-1).
WVU SPORTS: The No. 17 West Virginia University men's team played to a 1-1 draw with Western Michigan Saturday at the WMU Soccer Complex in Kalamazoo, Mich. Ryan Cain netted a goal in the 53rd minute to salvage the draw for the Mountaineers (6-2-2). Shane Lyons scored on a breakaway in the 11th minute for Western Michigan (7-2-2).
MU SPORTS: Marshall freshman Erin Simmons converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute against UAB as the Thundering Herd earned a 3-2 win Friday in Birmingham, Ala. Kelly Culicerto and Chelsey Maiden netted goals for Marshall (6-5).
FOOTBALL AWARD: Wirt County's Josh Trembly and Jon Cain are the U.S. Air Force Precision Air Strike of the Week award winners. Trembly threw for 273 yards on 11-of-17 passing with two touchdowns while Cain had three catches for 101 yards and both scoring strikes in Wirt's 33-6 win over Parkersburg Catholic last week.
Prep football: Friday's games
Alexander's 63-yard run marked the first TD for the Tigers (3-3), who also got scores from Dustin Smith (5-yard run) and Devin Wiley (30-yard pass from Brandon White).
Matt Chapman led Chapmanville's defense with seven solo tackles and an interception he returned 37 yards. For the Mavericks (2-4), Micah Deskins had a 5-yard TD run.
Hunter Bradley scored all three TDs for the Raiders (3-3) and ended with 158 yards on 22 carries.
