The Mountain State Athletic Conference soccer championships will feature three Kanawha Valley teams in the boys and girls finals today at the Trace Fork Soccer Complex.Hurricane (16-0), ranked No. 1 by the state coaches association, will take on No. 3 Winfield (12-1-2) in a Putnam County rivalry at noon in the boys title game. On the girls side, No. 4 George Washington (11-2-1) will face No. 6 Princeton (13-1) at 2 p.m.The Redskins handed the Generals their only loss this season, a 1-0 decision Sept. 4 on a goal from sophomore Loran Meadows with 5:56 left in the game.Felipe Thompson, an exchange student from Chile, has scored a Kanawha Valley-leading 31 goals for Hurricane while Alex White and Trevor Cunningham have nine apiece. Winfield sophomore Steven Taylor has 21 goals while senior Preston Sheldon has chipped in 12.
GW and Princeton didn't meet during the regular season. The Patriots sport a balanced scoring attack with Charlie Lucente's 11 goals, Taylor Ellis' 10 and Stephanie Kelly's seven while sophomore Olivia Miller is one of the top keepers in the state. The Tigers have won nine straight and haven't lost since Aug. 30.nn

WVU SOCCER: Kate Schwindel's first half goal and a strong outing from goalkeeper Sara Keane pushed No. 16 West Virginia past host Kansas, 1-0, Friday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.Schwindel scored the game-winner in the 43rd minute on a blast inside the left post for the Mountaineers (8-3-3).
