WVC SPORTS: The University of Charleston women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Golden Eagles downed WVU Tech 4-0 at Trace Fork.Kelsey LaCroiz scored in the 5th minute with a header past Tech keeper Bridget Leach. Brittany Akers and Lauren Haven added first half goals for the Golden Eagles (6-7-2) and Raquel Hill-Spranger completed the scoring for UC in the 81st minute.UC's Jordan Roberts, West Liberty's Marco Ricchetti and Fairmont State's Matt Wilmer have been named West Virginia Conference football players of the week.
Roberts earned his third offensive award of the season. At No. 24 UNC Pembroke, Roberts rushed for 144 yards on 26 carries for two touchdowns for the Golden Eagles to earn co-offensive honors. He also threw a 31-yard touchdown strike to Shaq WilliamsRoberts also earned the nod on special teams after weaving his way through the Braves' defense for a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.Wilmer sparked the Falcons' win over West Virginia Wesleyan with three second-half touchdowns and had career highs in receptions (seven), receiving yards (163) and touchdown catches.
Ricchetti picked up the defensive award after he intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards before lateraling it to Rod White for the game's first score in the upset of No. 25 Shepherd. He also posted 12 tackles on the day, six of which were solo stops.West Virginia Wesleyan's Matthew Brown has been named the conference men's soccer player of the week after helping the Bobcats to a 2-0 week. Brown registered two goals and had two assists in the wins.Concord's Alyanna James has earned conference women's soccer honors, helping the Mountain Lions with two game-winning goals last week. Against WVU Tech, James tallied the golden goal just 1:59 into the contest off a pass from Kari Simon. In the victory over the Fighting Scots, James booted home the winning score at the 96:56 mark.Fairmont State's Bri Swann has been tabbed conference volleyball player of the week, guiding the Falcons to a 4-0 record while helping the squad push its winning streak to 11 matches. Swann totaled 58 kills while playing just 13 sets. In three of the matches she earned a double-double, finishing the week with 46 digs.The West Virginia State University women's tennis team won three conference matches over the weekend to clinch the West Virginia Conference championship. The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season unbeaten with a 12-0 overall record and a 10-0 mark in conference play. West Virginia State defeated seven league opponents by 9-0 scores and recorded 7-2 wins over the other three. This makes the fourth title in the last seven years for the Yellow Jackets.
MU SOCCER: The Marshall women's coaching staff will host a coaches education clinic Oct. 27-28 on the MU campus.
