Roundup: GW, SC advance to boys sectional final

Andrew Wells and Noah Miller each scored first-half goals to help lead George Washington to a 2-0 win over Riverside in the Class AAA Region 3 Section 1 boys soccer tournament Wednesday at Trace Fork Soccer Complex.Peter Nelson accounted for assists on both goals for the Patriots (14-5-2). Riverside goalkeeper Austin Ballengee made 15 saves.GW will face South Charleston for the sectional title at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trace Fork.
  • SC 1, CAPITAL 0: Issac Cosby found Chris Brown with a pass late in the first half and Brown put the ball in the net for the only goal in the Black Eagles' win in the Class AAA Region 3 Section 1 tournament.
  • South Charleston (14-4-1) advances to play George Washington on Saturday for the sectional championship. Capital falls to 5-9-4.
  • SISSONVILLE 4, HOOVER 1: Madison Jones had three goals and Courtney Strobel one to lift the Indians (20-2) to the AA-A Region 4 Section 1 girls title at Falling Rock. For Herbert Hoover (13-6-2), Bailey Aab stopped 12 shots and Hannah Schoolcraft tallied the goal.

  • WVU BASEBALL: Current and former West Virginia University baseball players will make their way to Morgantown this weekend for the annual Alumni Baseball Reunion Weekend.
    Current professional players Grant Buckner (a Herbert Hoover alum currently in the Chicago White Sox organization), David Carpenter (a Fairmont native currently with the Toronto Blue Jays) and Jedd Gyorko (a Morgantown native playing in the San Diego Padres organization) will attend.

  • WVU SOCCER: WVU men's soccer senior defender Eric Schoenle has been named as one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Senior CLASS award.To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas - community, classroom, character and competition.Schoenle has been a four-year captain and currently leads the team in goals (five) and has anchored a defense that has only allowed 11 goals and accounted for five shutouts this season.

  • YMCA TENNIS: The YMCA will be hosting its annual YMCA Open Tennis Tournament on Oct. 26-28.
