RIPLEY - Freshman Sophia Bumgarner scored the winning goal in penalty kicks as No. 4 Charleston Catholic upset No. 1 Sissonville 2-1 Tuesday night in the Class AA-A Region 4 final at Ripley High School. The Fighting Irish (15-5-2) advance to the state tournament semifinals Nov. 2 at the YMCA Sports Complex in Beckley. Catholic failed to get out of its sectional tournament last year. The Indians (20-3) missed their first two penalty kicks while Catholic made the first and misfired on the second. Sissonville's Mary Schmeck and Cassidy Lewis converted their kicks for a 2-1 lead. Catholic junior Brianne Ross scored to forge a 2-2 tie with the final round for both teams coming up. Indians freshman Karli Pinkerton, who tallied earlier in the second half to tie the game 1-1, was wide right on her attempt then Bumgarner followed with her shot inside the right post.Freshman Payton Mullen scored an unassisted goal to give Catholic a 1-0 lead with 20:52 left in the opening half. After a corner kick, the ball bounded around in front of the net and two Sissonville defenders failed to clear it and Mullen was right there to put it away as the Irish's lead stood for the rest of the first half.
Pinkerton knotted the game at 1-all after a mistake by the Irish defense a little less than eight minutes into the second half. The ball went through the legs of a Catholic defender and Pinkerton was behind her waiting on the ball for the tally. A couple of minutes earlier, Pinkerton sent a header in front of the goal over the crossbar. The Indians missed several scoring opportunities up to that point as senior Lydia Murray, who set the Kanawha Valley girls career goal scoring record this year, had a breakaway but Irish junior keeper Annie Crockett made a sliding save. Then early in the second half, Taylor Rhodes sent a free kick from about 28 yards wide left.Reach Tommy R. Atkinson at or 304-348-4811.
