Athletes from the Kanawha Valley swept the Player of the Year awards for boys and girls soccer, as voted on by the coaches.In Class AAA, Hurricane's Felipe Thompson was tabbed as the state's top player. Thompson, who is originally from Chile, helped lead the Redskins to their first state title with a win against Parkersburg in the championship match.Capital's Michelle Newhouse won the girls award in Class AAA. Newhouse, a senior goalkeeper for the Cougars, led Capital to the sectional championship game where it fell 2-0 to eventual state runner-up George Washington.Charleston Catholic's Sam Revercomb was named the top boys player in Class AA-A. Revercomb, a senior, had goals in the Irish's semifinal and state championship matches, helping lead Catholic to a fourth-consecutive state crown.Sissonville's Lydia Murray, Kanawha County's all-time leading scorer, won the award for Class AA-A girls. The Indians were at or near the top of the girls state rankings all season before falling 2-1 to Charleston Catholic in the regional championship.nn
WVU HOOPS: The WVU women's basketball team will being its season tonight when the Mountaineers host UNC Wilmington at the WVU Coliseum.It is the first-ever meeting between the schools. Last season, UNCW finished with a 20-13 record and advanced to the Women's NIT for the second consecutive year.nn
WVU SOCCER: The West Virginia men's soccer team will play Northern Illinois in the semifinal round of the Mid-American Conference tournament today in Akron, Ohio.The Mountaineers finished the regular season 9-5-2 (4-2-1 MAC) and have won seven of their last 11 games.Northern Illinois comes in to the match with a 6-9-3 record and is the No. 2 seed. The winner of this game will face either top-seed Akron or Bowling Green in Sunday's championship game.WVU landed five players on the All-MAC soccer teams in the Mountaineers first season in the conference. Senior defender Eric Schoenle was named to the first team while sophomore Andy Bevin, senior Peabo Doue, senior Uwem Etuk and senior Travis Pittman were selected to the All-MAC second team.nn

MU SOCCER: Marshall's Zach Hunter has been named to the Conference USA All-Academic team, making him the fifth Thundering Herd player to receive a conference honor in the last week.Hunter, a redshirt junior from Mariette, Ga., started 13 games and recorded a team-best 3.74 grade-point average as a double-major in chemistry and math.
