Roundup: UC's Vincent, Grassie win WVC soccer honors

The University of Charleston, fresh off an undefeated West Virginia Conference regular season and conference tournament championship, garnered the league's top men's soccer honors as Rob Vincent earned WVC player of the year and Chris Grassie was tabbed the coach of the year.Vincent led the Golden Eagles with 26 points on nine goals and eight assists, producing three game-winning tallies. He ranks among the league leaders in game-winning goals (first), points per game (third), points (fourth), goals (fifth), assists (fifth), assists per game (fifth) and goals per game (sixth).Grassie, in his second year at the helm of the UC squad, led the Golden Eagles to a 13-1-4 record, including a 9-0 mark against conference teams.Davis & Elkins midfielder Oliver Bienias was named freshman of the year.

  • WVU SPORTS: The West Virginia men's soccer team was knocked out of the Mid-American Conference championships in the semifinal round by Northern Illinois, losing 1-0 Friday.Jayson LeSeth notched the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute off a direct kick from just outside the left side of the penalty box. The Mountaineers will now wait until the NCAA tournament selection to learn their further postseason fate. The selection show is 5:30 p.m. Monday and will be broadcast live on
  • The No. 1-ranked West Virginia rifle team shot its way to a dominating 4720-4624 win over visiting No. 9 Ole Miss in Morgantown Friday.
  • The Mountaineers' team score is an NCAA record and the squad's third school-record total shot this season. The mark bested the previous national record of 4717, shot in WVU's victory over Memphis on Oct. 16.
  • Led by NCAA championship individual qualifier Sarah-Anne Brault, the West Virginia cross country team took fifth place at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Friday in State College, Pa.
  • The Mountaineers finished with 111 points for fifth out of 31 teams, while meet host and No. 15 Penn State won the event with 61 points.Brault will compete at the NCAA championships for the third year in a row after coming in seventh place with a 6K time of 20:35. Brault also received all-region honors for the third year in a row, along with WVU freshmen Kelly Williams and Sydney Scott.
  • West Virginia women's basketball coach Mike Carey is this season's honorary chairperson for The Morgantown Salvation Army Red Kettle Christmas Campaign.
  • Carey has teamed up with the Salvation Army's Forgotten Angels, a program that allows those names on the angel tree that go unadopted the ability to still receive a present at the holiday season. The WVU women's basketball game on Nov. 17 at the WVU Coliseum will be dedicated to the area's forgotten angels. Fans who bring an unwrapped toy for the Angel Tree Program will receive a voucher good for admittance to a future WVU women's basketball home game.

  • MU SPORTS: Shay Weaver scored a career-high 19 points as the Marshall women's basketball team edged out Radford 65-63 in the season opener Friday at the Cam Henderson Center.The Thundering Herd survived an end-of-game rally from the Highlanders to pick up the win. The Herd shot 46 percent from the field compared to Radford's 39.3 percent. Marshall was 6 for 15 from beyond the arc while Radford struggled with a 5-for-17 effort.
  • Marshall punter Tyler Williams was announced as one of 10 semifinalists for the 2012 Ray Guy Award. The list was released Friday by the Augusta Sports Council.
  • Williams has a 45.81-yard average. Of his 32 punts, 12 have been placed inside the 20-yard line, six have been fair-caught and 10 have been of the 50-yards-plus variety. On the season, the Herd is fourth nationally in net punting with a 45.67-yard mark.
