WVU Tech's men's basketball team went 3-1 last week, including two victories and a championship at the Rio Grande Bevo Tournament that finished Saturday.The Golden Bears took wins over Rio Grande and Wilberforce, Ohio, in the tournament to go along with a win over Bluefield State early in the week before falling on Sunday at Central State 81-49.Tonight, Tech (6-2) takes on its third West Virginia Conference foe of the young season when it travels to Glenville State (1-1) for a 7 p.m. tipoff.David Rawlinson leads the Golden Bears, averaging 25.3 points per game including a 41-point outburst in Saturday's win over Rio Grande. WVU WOMEN WIN: Crystal Leary's 11 second-half points helped the No. 14 West Virginia women's basketball team win at Boston University 60-57 Monday.Ayana Dunning led the Mountaineers (2-0) with her second-consecutive double-double this season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Averee Fields chipped in 11 points, including 5 of 7 from the free throw line for WVU.Boston was led by Chantell Alford with a game-high 30 points.nn
WVC VOLLEYBALL: The University of Charleston posted a victory over No. 11 West Liberty Monday in an opening round match of the West Virginia Conference tournament.
The No. 6 Golden Eagles won 25-15, 25-19, 25-12. UC was led by Malleri Hardison's 18 kills, while Kelsey Eby added 33 assists and nine digs.No. 7 West Virginia State recorded a win over No. 10 Concord, 25-14, 20-25, 25-14, 27-25. Katie Avery and Alyssa Graboski each had 12 kills in the win for the Yellow Jackets. Jessica Gooch posted 25 digs.
In other first-round matches, No. 12 Davis & Elkins upset No. 5 Pitt-Johnstown 13-25, 25-23, 13-25, 25-21, 15-13 and No. 8 Shepherd downed No. 9 Wesleyan 25-19, 25-17, 25-15.The quarterfinals are set at UC Thursday. (See Page 2B).nn
WESLEYAN COACH OUT: West Virginia Wesleyan football coach Jonas Jackson resigned Sunday. He served as head coach for two seasons after joining the Wesleyan staff as an assistant under Denny Crehan.The Bobcats were 9-2 in 2011 and earned a national ranking before finishing 3-8 this season.nn
WVU SPORTS: The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recognized three WVU runners that earned All-Region awards in Division I following this weekend's NCAA Regional Championships. Senior Sarah-Anne Brault and freshmen Kelly Williams and Sydney Scott were honored after finishing in seventh, 22nd and 24th place, respectively, at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Brault moves on to the NCAA Championships.The West Virginia wrestling team had four wrestlers place in the top six at the Wolfpack Open Sunday. Nathan Pennesi (133) led the way by placing third, while A.J. Vizcarrondo (197) and Tre Miller-Scott (149) both placed fourth. In addition, freshman Mark Colabucci (184) took sixth in his bracket.The No. 1-ranked WVU rifle team picked up its second Great American Rifle Conference win in three days and pushed its win streak to seven with a 4697-4596 victory over visiting No. 13 N.C. State Sunday. The Mountaineers (7-0) swept the Wolfpack in both guns, winning air rifle 2,358-2,317 and smallbore 2,339-2,279. Five shooters combined for the team's scores, including Petra Zublasing, Daniel Sojka, Taylor Ciotola, Meelis Kiisk and Garrett Spurgeon.
MU VOLLEYBALL: Following a 2-0 weekend in which the Marshall volleyball team swept Tulane and UTEP and secured the No. 6 seed for the Conference USA tournament, junior outside hitter Laura Der was named Conference USA Offensive player of the week. Der led C-USA for the week with 6.17 kills per set and 0.83 service aces per set.nn
WVC HONORS: Shepherd's Chad Moore has been named the West Virginia Conference men's basketball player of the week. Moore averaged 27.5 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Bowie State and a loss to East Stroudsburg.nn
MEMORIAL RUN: St. Albans High School hosts the 5th annual Nick Caldwell Memorial 5K Run at 9 a.m. Saturday.The entry fee is $20, or $25 on day of the race.
