St. Albans senior softball player Ali Haynes will sign to play at West Virginia State at 2:45 p.m. today in the school's library.Haynes was captain of the Class AAA all-state second team after this past season as a pitcher by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association, posting a 22-5 record with a 1.27 earned run average and 117 strikeouts. She earned first-team all-state honors as a sophomore in 2011.Haynes owns a 48-9 three-year pitching mark and a .426 batting average to go along with a 4.0 grade-point average. She has earned All-Mountain State Athletic Conference first-team honors after the past three seasons and was a starter on the Red Dragons' 2010 state championship team.nn
WVU HOOPS: The West Virginia women's basketball team climbed in both the Associated Press and USA Today national polls this week. The Mountaineers (2-0) are now No. 17 in the AP poll and No. 19 in the USA Today poll after wins against UNC Wilmington and Boston University to open their season.WVU next plays at home Saturday against the University of South Carolina Upstate.nn
WVU VOLLEYBALL: WVU volleyball players Liz Gulick and Karly Rasmussen were named to the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 team.Gulick, a junior from Wheaton, Ill., earned a 4.0 GPA and was named to the first team while Rasmussen earned the nod on the second team.nn
MU HOOPS: The Marshall women's basketball fell to Indiana State 55-49 Monday inside the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Herd (1-1) was led by Chukwuka Ezeigbo, who, in her first career start, posted team-highs in points (12), rebounds (eight) and blocked shots (seven). The Sycamores (2-0) were paced by Rachael Mann with a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds.nn
MU VOLLEYBALL: Marshall junior Laura Der was named to the All-Conference USA volleyball first team, the league announced Tuesday.Der, an outside hitter for the Thundering Herd, is the first Marshall player to receive first-team honors since Elizabeth Herman in 2010.
Middle blocker Jillian Shemanski was also announced as a member of the All-Conference USA freshman team.nn
