Local college basketball: State men rally for win
West Virginia State men's basketball team rallied from a one-point deficit with 1:54 to play for a 72-68 win over host Mount Olive at the Pickle Classic Friday at Mount Olive, N.C.
David Ford hit back-to-back buckets to give the Yellow Jackets a 71-68 lead and Brandon Ross hit a free throw with three seconds remaining to seal the win. Ford netted 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds for West Virginia State (2-1), while Anton Hutchins added 14 points and nine rebounds. Deshaune Green paced Mount Olive (0-1) with a double-double of 26 points and 14 rebounds.
West Virginia State returns to action today to face Lenoir-Rhyne College at 5 p.m. in the Pickle Classic.
Rawlinson went 9 for 15 from the field and grabbed six rebounds for the Golden Bears (7-2), while Brandon Burgraff was 8 for 17 from the field for 23 points, including five 3-pointers. Malik Stith scored a team-high 24 points for the Falcons (2-1) while Isaiah Hill chipped in 20.
Senior Amber Tully led the way for the Golden Bears with 14 points and five rebounds. Nia Nolan had a season high of 13 points while racking up three rebounds.
Tech will face Virginia Intermont College at 1:30 p.m. today.
