Local college basketball: State edges Jesuit; UC falls in OT

Nine different players scored for West Virginia State as the Yellow Jackets edged visiting Wheeling Jesuit 77-76 Saturday in a West Virginia Conference men's basketball matchup at Institute.Anton Hutchins led the way for State (4-3 overall, 2-1 WVC) with 15 points while David Ford and Jalen Walker each scored 11.For Wheeling Jesuit (2-2, 0-2), Recardo Gaddy scored 28 points, Ben Siefert 16 and Justin Fritts 14.
  • SHEPHERD 80, UC 74 OT: All five starters scored in double-figures for the University of Charleston but it was not quite enough.
  • UC (2-1, 0-1) led 38-31 at halftime, but was outscored by the Rams (4-1, 2-0) 34-27 in the second half and 15-9 in the overtime period.For Shepherd, Brantley Osborne led the way with 21 points. Chad Moore and Marcus Pilgrim each added 13 points for the Rams.Aleksander Kesic led Charleston with 18 points, followed by Evan Faulker (16), Corey Jackson (14), Xavier Humphrey (13) and Hayden Annett (11). Fred Simpson (2 points) was the only other UC player to score in the game.
  • BELLARMINE 80, WVU TECH 69: Vance Hall scored 21 points to lead all scorers as visiting Bellarmine beat WVU Tech in Montgomery
  • Bellarmine (5-0) had four players (including Hall) score in double-figures in the win. Chris Dove finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds  with Jake Thelen and Keisten Jones each finishing with 12 points.Tech (8-5) hung with Bellarmine, the No. 4-ranked team in the National Association of Basketball Coaches NCAA Division II Top 25, trailing by seven at the half but could never quite close the gap.
    For the Golden Bears, Terrale Clark led the team with 16 points. Floyd Campbell scored 12 and Jaren Marino, Brandon Burgraff and Kornilous Donnell each finished with 11.Women's basketball
  • SHEPHERD 109, UC 70:  Gabby Flinchum scored a career-high 26 points to go along with 12 rebounds to lead the hos Rams past Charleston.
  • Rams' forward Emily Daniel added 15 points, 11 rebounds and a game-high seven assists for Shepherd (2-2, 1-1).For Charleston (2-2, 0-1), Jessi Cowden was the leading scorer with 17 points and LeAnne Ross added 11.
  • W.VA. STATE 76, WHEELING JESUIT 71: Jasmine Blanton scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead West Virginia State to the win against visiting Wheeling Jesuit.
  • State (3-0, 3-0) also got 18 points from Jordan Brock, 14 from Janelle Williams and 11 from Maria Femia. For Wheeling Jesuit (1-3, 0-2), Breanna Butler scored a team-high 19 points.
  • CEDARVILLE 67, WVU TECH 51: WVU Tech dropped the opening-round game of the Ben Waterman Classic at Central State University to Cedarville.
  • Becky Orchard netted 14 points for Cedarville (5-0) while Kayla Jenerette chipped in 13. Nia Nolan was the lone Golden Bear (4-5) in double-digits with 14 points.
