Scott graduate Makenzie White enters tonight's Capital Classic looking for her first points as a Mountaineer.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Makenzie White is looking to make some new memories tonight. The West Virginia University freshman will get her first taste of the Chesapeake Energy Classic when the Mountaineers take on in-state rival Marshall at 7 tonight at the Civic Center. The Civic Center floor has been a home away from home for White, who led Scott to the Class AA state championship game for three straight seasons but each time coming up short. The 5-foot-7 guard was named the state player of the year last season and surpassed 2,000 career points, which only a handful of players in the state have accomplished, in a stellar four-year career for the Skyhawks, which included three straight all-state first-team selections."It's exciting for me,'' said White before practice Monday at the Civic Center. "There's a lot of old memories good and bad. We lost the last three years, but I got a couple of records here so ... I'm excited to be here. Hopefully, we'll get a lot of people to come out.''
White said it has been a big adjustment going from AA high school basketball to the Division I level in the Big 12 Conference."It's another level,'' she said. "Everything's different. The weight lifting, the conditioning, school work ... it's way different than high school. It's way harder and more time consuming. I've adjusted to it. At first it was crazy hard. I'm doing really well. It's everything I had hoped and more.''White has played in two games for the Mountaineers (4-2), and is averaging three minutes per game with one steal and 0-for-3 shooting. It has been tough to crack the lineup on a team that has been ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today-ESPN Top 25 polls."I haven't played much, but I'm a freshman and I've got to work for it so I'm going to do everything I can to get on the floor,'' she said.Reach Tommy R.
