Boys roundup: Capital shades GW at buzzer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Freshman Miguel Bays hit a short jump shot on the baseline with four seconds left to lift host Capital over George Washington 36-35 Wednesday night in a Class AAA boys high school basketball matchup.George Washington senior guard Luke Eddy, who finished with a game-high 16 points, put a shot from just inside halfcourt at the buzzer, but missed. The Patriots (0-1) tied the game in the fourth quarter, then the teams traded baskets until Bays' winning shot."Right now we're happy about any wins we can get,'' said Capital veteran coach Carl Clark. "The kids fought real hard. They had a tough game Monday with Huntington [a 69-57 loss].''Freshman Tyhree Pratt netted nine points to pace the Cougars (1-1) and Carrington Morris contributed eight points and six steals.Capital and GW are both rebuilding this year."It just depends on how well the kids respond to the things we're trying to teach them,'' Clark said.Tuesday's games
  • CATHOLIC 68, CROSS LANES 41: David Godwin netted 18 points for host Charleston Catholic in a win against Cross Lanes Christian. Nick George added 16 points for the Fighting Irish, while Garret McCarty had 11. Grant Humphrey scored 14 and Tyler Corbin 13 for Cross Lanes.
  • BROOKE 65, PARK. SOUTH 63: Russell Schweitfeger scored 20 points and Hunter Wallace 19 as Brooke rallied from a halftime deficit to beat visiting Parkersburg South. Wes Mitchem scored a game-high 21 points in the loss for Parkersburg South.
  • RIPLEY 47, PT. PLEASANT 37: Casey Smith scored 15 points and the host Vikings held Point Pleasant to 34 percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers. Kade Harrison and Chuck Sleboda added 10 points each for Ripley (1-0). Dillon McCarty had 12 points to pace the Big Blacks (0-3).
  • ALLEGANY 87, HAMPSHIRE 74: Trent Merrick poured in 29 points for visiting Allegany (Md). Bryce Nightengale and Christian Thomas added 14 points each for Allegany (2-0), Calvin McKenzie had 12 and Mario D'Atri 10. Garrett Crawford had 26 points for Hampshire (1-3), backed by Travis Clower (17), Logan Hill (14) and Dane Heavener (10).
  • HANNAN 72, VAN 66: Tyler Burns (15 points) and Tyler Jenkins (14) led a balanced attack that led to a win for the visiting Wildcats (1-2). Also for Hannan, Brad Fannin scored 13, Paul Holley 12 and Ty Paige 10. Brandon Elswick had 29 points, Keith Blevins 13 and Logan Crouse 11 for the Bulldogs (0-3).
  • WINFIELD 81, LINCOLN COUNTY 27: Bear Bellomy hit five 3-pointers and led Winfield with 23 points in the Generals' win against visiting Lincoln County. Andrew Davis led Lincoln County (0-3) with 13 points.
  • CHAPMANVILLE 42, HOOVER 24: Mackenzie Martin and Denver Adkins scored 14 points apiece as Chapmanville (1-0) earned a home win over Herbert Hoover. Cody Morris had points for the Huskies (0-1).
  • ROANE 65, CALHOUN 34: Jacob Neal poured in 21 points to pace host Roane County. Tyler Harper contributed 12 for the Raiders (3-0). For Calhoun County (0-3), Ryan Harper had 11 points.
  • VALLEY 67, FAYETTEVILLE 26: Arik McGinnis posted 15 points for Valley in a road win. Raeshawn Breckenridge added 11 points for the Greyhounds (1-0). Zach Semple had eight points for Fayetteville (0-2).
