Roundup: Winfield girls win, Buffalo loses
Mara Rhoades scored 20 points to lead Winfield to a 51-45 win against Parkersburg in the semifinals of the Jack Stephens Memorial Holiday Tournament in Parkersburg.
Haylea Roberson chipped in with 10 points for the Generals (4-2), who will play Marietta (Ohio) for the championship at 7:15 p.m. today.
Haley Ackerman finished with 20 points while Imani Ward added 13 points and 12 rebounds for Parkersburg (4-4). The Big Reds play Wheeling Park at 5:30 p.m. in the consolation game.
Kayla Kinney and Liz Adams both scored 10 points in the win for Wirt (3-5).
Chelsea Parkins led the attack for Buffalo (5-3) with 11 points.
Approximately 215 swimmers from 11 high schools in West Virginia and Ohio will be in town today for the 2012 HYCAT December Holiday High School Invitational at the University of Charleston.
Capital will serve as the host with teams from Cabell Midland, Charleston Catholic, George Washington, Huntington, Hurricane, Nitro, River Valley (Ohio), St. Albans, Winfield and Gallia Academy (Ohio) competing.
GW won the boys and girls team titles at last year's meet. The Patriot boys, along with Hurricane, enter the meet as favorites based on times from previous meets, while the Patriot girls are expected to compete for a repeat title. Both GW teams won the HYCAT December Invitational on Dec. 1.
The meet starts at 1:15 p.m. and admission is free.
