CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Holiday basketball tournaments will be in full swing this weekend around the Mountain State, including two big ones here in the Kanawha Valley.
South Charleston hosts a four-team boys tournament beginning today at the South Charleston Community Center with Riverside challenging the host Black Eagles at 7 p.m. In the late game, Pickerington (Ohio) takes on Madison Central (Ky.) in a matchup of two powerhouse programs in their respective states.
Also today, the Charleston Catholic Showcase begins with a pair of girls games - Poca vs. the host Irish at 1 p.m., followed at 2:30 by Keyser taking on Chapmanville. Braxton County faces the Catholic boys in the final game at 4:30. The Showcase resumes Saturday with six games on tap, starting at noon with a girls game between Keyser and Tolsia. Capital's girls meet University at 1:30, followed by a boys game between Greater Beckley Christian and St. Joseph at 3. Saturday's action concludes with a tripleheader of games between Summers County and Charleston Catholic. At 4:30, the Bobcats take on the Irish boys junior varsity team, with the girls varsity game at 6 and the boys varsity at 7:30.
Several other teams from around the Valley will be hitting the road for tournaments, including Capital's boys traveling to Greenbrier East, Buffalo's boys heading to Wirt County and Riverside and Sissonville hitting the Rod Hudson girls tournament at Ripley.
BROOKE SWIM MEET: Some of the state's top individual swimmers and teams will be competing today in the Brooke Winter Invitational beginning at 11:30 a.m.
South Charleston is among the 10 teams scheduled to appear.
5K RACE: The Huntington Road Runners will host the Race Into The New Year 5K Run/Walk at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Albans High School. The cost is $15 in advance or $20 the day of the race. For more information, contact Ricky Campbell at email@example.com
