WVU QB coach leaves for Texas A&M job

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - They're going to need name tags in the West Virginia quarterbacks meeting room by the time spring drills begin. Not only is three-year starting quarterback Geno Smith gone, now so too is quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital.Spavital, whose young coaching career has been joined at the hip with WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen, is going to Texas A&M to become the quarterbacks coach and offensive co-coordinator."I'm grateful for the opportunity that Dana has given me in my career,'' Spavital told "And I'm excited to get to A&M and continue the success that they've had.''Spavital will go from coaching last season's early Heisman Trophy frontrunner, Smith, to the eventual winner, sophomore-to-be Johnny Manziel.
Spavital, 27, served as a graduate assistant with Holgorsen at Houston, Oklahoma State and West Virginia before Holgorsen gave him the full-time position as quarterbacks coach a year ago. Prior to that he was a graduate assistant at Tulsa. While at Houston, Holgorsen and Spavital both worked under head coach Kevin Sumlin, who is now the coach at Texas A&M.Spavital's position as the quarterbacks coach at WVU is the third so far that Holgorsen will be filling in the offseason. He fired two others, cornerbacks coach Daron Roberts and outside linebackers and special teams coach Steve Dunlap.Holgorsen has apparently replaced the two defensive coaches with Tony Gibson and Brian Mitchell, although neither hiring has been announced.Reach Dave Hickman at 304-348-1734 or or follow him at
