Catholic boys take over top spot in Class ACHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston Catholic moved into the No. 1 spot in Class A as the second week of boys high school basketball rankings were released on Monday. The Irish passed previous No. 1 Magnolia, which fell to No. 2 after a loss to Clay-Battelle last week.A new No. 1 was named in Class AA as well as Bluefield assumed the spot after previous No. 1 Scott lost to Tolsia and Poca last week. The Skyhawks fell to No. 3 while the Dots moved into the No. 2 spot and picked up a first-place vote.Class AAA No. 1 Martinsburg was the only previous No. 1 to keep its spot, while South Charleston moved up from No. 3 to No. 2. George Washington fell out of the top 10 and Hurricane makes its debut in the poll at No. 10.Buffalo dropped from No. 4 to No. 6 in Class A. For a full list of rankings, see Page 2B.
East, Westside, St. Joe No. 1 in AP girls pollsGreenbrier East, Westside and St. Joseph were No. 1 in their respective classes Monday in the second Associated Press regular-season girls basketball polls.East, the defending state champion, received all 10 first-place votes for the top spot in the Class AAA poll followed by University, Morgantown, John Marshall and Spring Valley. George Washington checked in No. 8. In AA, defending titlist Westside was No. 1 followed by Bridgeport, Clay County, Summers County and Nicholas County. Sissonville was seventh.St. Joe, the four-time defending state champion earned the top ranking in Class A, followd by Wheeling Central, St. Marys, Clay-Battelle and Parkersburg Catholic. Valley held down the No. 7 spot.
