Area roundup: West Virginia State visits Glenville State

The West Virginia State men's basketball team returns to the court today looking to break out of a two-game slide when it visits Glenville State for a 4 p.m. tip.The Yellow Jackets (6-9 overall, 4-6 West Virginia Conference) are coming off lopsided losses to Charleston (92-56 last Saturday) and Fairmont State (88-60 on Monday). State scored a 105-92 victory over the Pioneers (8-6, 4-5) in their previous meeting this season on Jan. 5.State currently sits in eighth place in the 15-team WVC, two spots ahead of Glenville. The regular-season champion earns an opening-round bye in the league tournament, while those teams finishing No. 2 through No. 8 receive first-round home games.

  • MU SOFTBALL: Tickets and tables are still available for Marshall softball's Diamond Club Dinner on Friday at the Marshall Foundation Hall.
    Tickets are $50 for individuals, and groups of up to eight can choose to purchase a sponsored table for $750. The group table includes eight dinner and drink tickets, table sponsor recognition and an advertisement.   • MU TENNIS: Junior Karlyn Timko, freshman Dana Oppinger and sophomore Elli Ball all won in singles as Marshall defeated Easter Michigan 4-3 Friday at the Huntington Tennis Club. It is the third consecutive year the Thundering Herd has beaten EMU in its regular-season opener.

  • LITTLE LEAGUE: The South Charleston Little League is having signups on Saturdays and Sundays at the South Charleston Community Center each weekend from now until Feb. 10. There will also be an opportunity to sign up on Feb. 17. Saturday signups are from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and Sunday signups are from 1 to 4 p.m. Early-bird rates are available until Feb. 1.
