Prep roundup: Fourth-quarter surge carries Capital over Riverside
Leading by just six points entering the fourth quarter, Capital pulled away in the final eight minutes to pick up a 71-53 boys basketball win Friday night at Riverside.Carrington Morris led the Cougars with 24 points, Austin Coleman contributed 20 and Brad Grose had 12.For Riverside, Nick Light had 17 points, Marcus Reed 13 and Tyus Wood 11.
BUFFALO 63, VALLEY 54: Buffalo improved to 11-1 and handed Valley its first loss of the season in a game at Buffalo. Laythen Good scored 22 points and Levi Jordan had 16 for Buffalo, which led 30-25 at halftime. Kashawn Breckenridge had 21 points and Zac Warden 10 for the Greyhounds (7-1).
HUNTINGTON 56, WINFIELD 53: Aric Nicks finished with 16 points and Shaquan Miller had 14 points to help Class AAA No. 7 Huntington escape Winfield with a win. Nathan DeMoss also had 10 points for the Highlanders (9-2). For Winfield (6-6), Chris Turner scored 16 points and Zach Fisher added 13.
POCA 55, SISSONVILLE 50: Five Poca players scored in double figures as the Class AA No. 2 Dots clawed back from a halftime deficit on the road to beat Sissonville. Noah Frampton led Poca (11-1) with 13 points while Jacob Payne scored 12. Cam Cottrill, Matt Chandler and Adam Sigman each finished with 10 points. For Sissonville (4-8), Zach Null had a game-high 23 points and Trent Sowards scored 13 in the loss.
NITRO 57, CABELL MIDLAND 42: Nitro built a 10-point halftime lead and breezed past visiting Cabell Midland. Angelo Sirianni led the Wildcats (6-6) with 20 points, Ethan Clark added 13 and Trevon Taylor had 12. Sawyer Beckett led Cabell Midland (4-9) with 19 points.
SCOTT 70, NICHOLAS 54: Senior Matt Dolan scored 27 points, giving him 1,007 for his career, to lead Scott (9-4) past visiting Nicholas County. Jared Tharp scored 17 points, Cody McClung had 14 and Eric Teyatt 10 for Nicholas (6-5).
MINGO 57, HOOVER 38: Austin Banks scored 17 points, handed out 10 assists and registered six steals for host Mingo Central. Alex Lee tallied 14 points for the Miners (7-5) and Marqus Cunningham scored 10. Josh Blackwell and Joey Forbes had eight points each for Herbert Hoover.
HOOVER 55, WIRT 53: With her team down by 10 points in the fourth quarter, Herbert Hoover's Bethany Romine hit four 3-pointers to rally the Huskies past Wirt County in the St. Marys Invitational. Romine, who entered the final period with just three points, finished with 15. Jordan Marshall led the Huskies with 18 points and Bailey Aab collected 13 rebounds. The Huskies (8-4) will face St. Marys in the tournament finals at 7:30 tonight. Taylor Watson scored 14 points, Amanda Clark had 11 and Miriam Smith 10 for Wirt (5-10).
RIPLEY 55, RAVENS-WOOD 33: Ripley won the battle of Jackson County schools behind 14 points each from Casey Smith and Jacob Haynes. Kade Harrison also had 11 points for the Vikings (4-8). For Ravenswood, Jacob Martin finished with a team-high 10 points.
PARKERSBURG SOUTH 81, BROOKE 77: Parkersburg South survived a strong Brooke fourth quarter for a victory in Parkersburg. The Patriots (10-3) led 71-58 with 3:24 left in the game, but Brooke (10-5) scored 32 fourth-quarter points to make it close. Doug Dennis scored 28 points and Wes Mitchem had 22 for Parkersburg South. Russell Schwertfeger led Brooke with 28, Austin Schambach had 12 and Thomas Cole 11.
CHAPMANVILLE 52, WAYNE 29: Kenny Plumley scored 13 points and Brady Cox added 12 as Chapmanville (7-4) downed visiting Wayne. Brett Justice scored 11 to lead Wayne.
WYOMING EAST 70, OAK HILL 64: Class AA No. 4 Wyoming East withstood a late Oak Hill rally for the win. For the Warriors (9-2), Austin Canada scored 21 points while Josh Tunstalle had 18 and Brett Bowling had 16. Joey Re led Oak Hill (2-8) with 18 points.
WAHAMA 66, SOUTH RACINE 50: Hunter Bradley and Austin Jordan scored 21 points each as Wahama defeated visiting South Racine, Ohio. Bradley led the White Falcons (4-8) with 13 rebounds and Trenton Gibbs had 10 rebounds and eight points. Tristen Wolfe had 19 points for South Racine (7-7).
CROSS LANES 66, TEAYS VALLEY 55: Tyler Corbin scored 31 points and Grant Humphrey had 16 as Cross Lanes Christian (9-8) upset visiting Teays Valley Christian. For the Lions (14-4), Elias Beacon finished with 26 points.
SISSONVILLE 47, POCA 33: Sissonville held Poca to just nine total points in the second and third quarters to pull away from the Dots. Karli Pinkerton led the Indians (10-3) with 22 points while Madison Jones chipped in with 19 points. For Poca (4-10), Paula Ord had 18 points.
CROSS LANES 40, TEAYS VALLEY 15: Courtney Kendrick contributed 23 points and seven blocks as Cross Lanes Christian defeated visiting Teays Valley Christian. Julianna Lowery added 11 points and Laura Jones had 11 rebounds for Cross Lanes (12-4). Gabby Harrah scored 11 points for Teays Valley (5-6).

RAVENSWOOD 73, WILLIAMSTOWN 51: Taylor Youell scored a game-high 26 points while Hailey Miller finished with 18 points in the win for Ravenswood. Hannah Murray scored 15 and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Red Devils, while Kenzie Smith led Williamstown with 15 points.
