Prep roundup: Point Pleasant hands Greenbrier East boys their first loss

Point Pleasant used a 20-14 run in the fourth quarter to stun Class AAA No. 4 Greenbrier East 62-60 in boys basketball Friday at the Big Atlantic Classic in Beckley.Alex Somerville led the Big Blacks (5-8) with 26 points while Dillon McCarty chipped in 14. Rondale Watson netted a game-high 30 points for the Spartans (15-1) and Obi Romeo had 13.
  • SOUTH 59, MUSSELMAN 42: Wes Mitchem scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Parkersburg South earned a win at the Big Atlantic Classic at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Logan Cox chipped in 10 points for the Patriots (13-3). Trevon Wesco scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds and five assists to lead Mussleman (11-4).
  • Musselman will play Greenbrier East at 12:20 p.m. today while South will meet Point Pleasant at 9.
  • TEAYS VALLEY 80, WOOD COUNTY 50: Teays Valley Christian held a 33-8 advantage in the third quarter as it ran past Wood County Christian in boys basketball Friday. Elias Beacom led all scorers with 21 points for the Lions (18-4) while Justin Wociezsak added 18, Zack Moore 16 and Ben Parsons 14. Jamie Arnold led the way with 19 points for Wood County and Zach Harper contributed 12.

  • GREEN. EAST 63, PRESTON 49: Class AAA No. 1 Greenbrier East used a 17-9 fourth-quarter run to down Preston in the Big Atlantic Classic in Beckley. Bianca Andre' led the Spartans (13-0) with 27 points while Maddee Carroll and Chaunte' McDowell chipped in 10 points apiece. Carley Kelley had 23 points for Preston (9-4).
  • WOOD 49, TEAYS 16: Hannah and Heather Lord combined for 34 points as Wood County Christian downed visiting Teays Valley Christian. Hannah Lord netted 20 for Wood County (12-6) while Heather Lord had 14. Gabby Harrah paced Teays Valley (7-10) with seven points.
  • PostponementsThere's something about Friday games that brings out the worst in the weather.For the second straight week, most Kanawha Valley boys basketball games were called off following a Friday morning snowfall.The only game involving a Kanawha or Putnam boys team played Friday was Wheeling Central against Charleston Catholic at Catholic's Athletic Facility on Hillcrest Drive.Central, which also plays at Winfield at 4 p.m. today, had already made the trip from the Northern Panhandle.Other boys games wiped out Friday (with makeup dates, if known) were: Nitro at Hurricane (today), Sissonville at Herbert Hoover (3:30 p.m. today), Riverside at Ripley (Monday), St. Albans at Winfield (tentatively Feb. 11) and Spring Valley at South Charleston (Feb. 13).Also, Buffalo's South Division semifinal game in the Hometown Invitational Tournament against visiting Richwood was postponed until 6 p.m. Monday.
    On the girls side, a couple of Cardinal Conference matchups were postponed with Sissonville at Herbert Hoover and Scott at Tolsia. Sissonville and Hoover haven't set a make-up date yet while Scott-Tolsia will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9.
