West Virginia was picked to finish last in the Big 12 baseball preseason coaches poll released Tuesday.The Mountaineers were tabbed as the ninth best team in the nine-team conference, with Oklahoma picked to win the Big 12. TCU was picked second. Texas, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State and Kansas followed with WVU last.West Virginia opens its 2013 season this weekend with a three-game series at North Florida. WVU's first Big 12 series is scheduled for March 15-17 at Kansas State before the Mountaineers visit Charleston for the first time in 2013 on March 19 to play Marshall.nn
WVU HOOPS: Six West Virginia women's basketball players were honored as Academic All-Big 12 selections Tuesday, more than any other school in the conference.
Sophomore Averee Fields, Akilah Bethes and Jess Harlee were picked for the first team (consisting of players with a 3.20 grade-point average or better). Brooke Hampton, Crystal Leary and Taylor Palmer were chosen for the second team (players with GPAs of 2.00 to 3.19).nn
WVSU SOFTBALL: West Virginia State University softball team begins its season Friday at the Shaw University Tournament in Raleigh, N.C.
The Yellow Jackets will play Lock Haven University at 11 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. game against Fayetteville State. WVSU will play Mansfield and Slippery Rock on Saturday before closing the weekend against California (Pa.) on Sunday.nn
MU TENNIS: The Charleston YMCA will host its annual Marshall University Alumni & Friends Tennis Tournament Feb. 22-24.Men's and women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles will be offered along with boys and girls 14-and-under singles and boys and girls 18-and-under singles.The entry fee is $29 per singles event, $26 per person for doubles events and $18 for junior events.
