Area roundup: WVU baseball team drops to 0-2 in Florida

West Virginia rallied from a three-run deficit but could not hold North Florida as the Mountaineers lost 7-6 on a walk-off single Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.WVU (0-2) took a 6-5 lead in the eighth inning but watched it slip away in the ninth when North Florida's Joe Wielbruda knocked a game-winning single to left field to score Donnie Dwees.Former Bridgeport standout Harrison Musgrave pitched in his first game for the Mountaineers in almost two years. He lasted four innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout but did not figure in the decision.The Mountaineers finish their three-game series with UNF at noon today. Right-hander Dan Dierdorff will get the start for WVU while Nick Allbritton will start for UNF.

  • MU BASEBALL: Marshall allowed three runs in the first inning and was never able to get back into the game as the Thundering Herd lost 10-1 to Old Dominion Saturday at Roanoke, Va.
    Marshall (1-1) got four innings from starting pitcher Aaron Blair, who allowed four earned runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Monarch starting left-hander Ryan Yarbrough claimed the win, lasting six innings and allowing one unearned run.The Herd plays the final game its series at ODU today at 1 p.m.

  • AAU HOOPS: The West Virginia Runnin' Rebels basketball team will have tryouts at Cedar Grove Middle School from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday for boys in grades 9-11 and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. for girls in grades 6-8.
