With two games left until the end of the regular season, West Virginia State and the University of Charleston hit the road tonight seeking to improve their seed in the upcoming West Virginia Conference tournament.The Yellow Jackets (10-16 overall, 7-13 WVC) visit Bluefield State (3-21, 3-17) at 7:30 p.m. State currently resides in 11th place in the WVC, but a win over the Blues could potentially vault the Jackets into 10th.Charleston (17-7, 13-7) travels to Wheeling Jesuit (16-8, 13-7) in a matchup of top-5 teams in the league. The Cardinals hold a slight edge over No. 5 UC in the conference ratings, but a win over Jesuit would vault UC into the No. 4 slot.The Golden Eagles wrap up their season Saturday against the Yellow Jackets. That game is set for 4 p.m. in Institute.Four West Virginia Conference teams appear in the Atlantic Region men's basketball poll, led by No. 1 West Liberty.
The Hilltoppers, who have already clinched the 2012-13 WVC regular-season championship and are ranked No. 3 nationally, are joined by Fairmont State (No. 3), Alderson-Broaddus (No. 7) and Wheeling Jesuit (No. 10) in the Atlantic Region poll.The regional rankings will be released two more times before the final NCAA tournament selections on March 10.nn
WVU SOCCER: The West Virginia women's team will take part in six matches during its 2013 spring schedule, announced Wednesday.The Mountaineers will host Duquesne (April 7), St. Francis (April 14), Maryland (April 20) and Kent State (April 27) while playing games against Pitt and Ohio State on April 13 in Pittsburgh.WVU will also host its annual 4v4 tournament on March 9 at the Caperton Indoor Facility to raise funds for the Betty Puskar Breast Cancer Center. The tournament is open to boys and girls in grades 3 through 8 and also features an open division for college-age and older groups.nn
COLLEGE BASEBALL: Tickets for the game between Marshall and West Virginia, scheduled for 6 p.m. on March 19 at Appalachian Power Park, are on sale through the Marshall University box office as part of the Thundering Herd's season ticket package.The 10-game packages cost $50 and feature a box seat for each MU game played at Appalachian Power Park, including series against UAB (March 29-31), Houston (April 5-7) and Tulane (April 26-28) as well as a ticket to the WVU game. Single-game tickets go on sale March 1 and can be purchased at the West Virginia Power box office or by calling 304-344-BATS.Marshall's game against North Carolina A&T, originally scheduled for Friday, will be played today in Greensboro, N.C. The Herd will also visit Mrytle Beach, S.C., to play at Coastal Carolina with the date and the starting time of the game still to be determined.
