Tech men, women join tourney fray today

Robert Morris College of Illinois began pulling away midway through the first half en route to an 82-62 men's victory over Allen University of South Carolina in the opening round of the six-team Association of Independent Institutions basketball tournament Friday at WVU Tech in Montgomery.The victory moves No. 3 Robert Morris to a second-round game against No. 2 WVU Tech at 8 p.m. today.In the other men's game Friday, No. 4 Voorhees College of South Carolina outlasted  No. 5 Morris College of South Carolina 104-97.In women's play, No. 3 Voorhees defeated No. 6 Allen 82-41 and will play No. 2 WVU Tech at 6 p.m. today. In the other women's game, No. 4 Cal State San Marcos downed No. 5 Morris 86-50 and will face No. 1 Robert Morris at 1 p.m. today.With Robert Morris and Allen tied at 20-20 with 10:46 left in the first half, RM began a 28-9 run to build a 48-28 halftime lead and led by as many as 23 points in the second half.Five players scored in double figures for Robert Morris, a 100-year-old school based in Chicago. Maurice Williams led the way with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting, Aubrey McAlpine added 14, Joshua Anderson had 12 and Sean Montgomery and Brian Bradley had 11 each.Richard Johnson led Allen with 30, and Christopher Spriggs had 15.The tournament winners go to the NAIA Division I tournament in Kansas City March 13-19.In Friday's other men's game:
  • VOORHEES 104, MORRIS 97: Voorhees led by 20 midway through the second half and shot 51.9 percent for the game but needed to survive a late Morris threat.
  • Voorhees led 98-95 with 1:26 left and hit just 4 of 9 free throws the rest of the way.Brandon Allen led Voorhees with 23 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals, Dominic Stevenson had 21 points, Jeffrey Evans added 17 and Sam Dotson and James Williams had 12 each.Justin Akieme had 21 points and 17 rebounds for Morris. Avery Johnson had 18 points, Andreaus Canty 16, Derrick Williams 14 and Clinton Chisolm 12.In women's play:
  • VOORHEES 82, ALLEN 41: Kiera Patterson connected on 7 of 8 3-point shots and led the Voorhees scoring 24 points, helping her team race to a 43-12 halftime advantage.
  •  Arielle McPhee led Allen with 12 points. Voorhees shot 51.6 for the game.
  • CAL STATE SAN MARCOS 86, MORRIS 50: San Marcos led 38-19 at halftime and eventually led by 38.
  • Heather Thompson played only 22 minutes and scored 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting to lead San Marcos. Cassie Damyanovich hit 7 of 8 from the floor for 14 points and Nanice Kollee was 6 of 9 for 14.Jessica Blair had 12 points and Tykeria Howard 10 for Morris.
