St. Joe's Johnson earns state Gatorade honor

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- St. Joseph's Mychal Johnson was named the West Virginia Gatorade girls basketball player of the year Thursday. The 5-foot-9 junior guard averaged 21.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 5.0 steals to lead the Fighting Irish to a 25-1 record and a state-record-tying fifth straight Class A state championship last week. Johnson, who has verbally committed to Notre Dame, turned in a triple-double in the state final, collecting 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a 73-32 win over St. Marys.
Johnson has maintained a 3.79 grade-point average and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple community service initiatives in association with her church youth group. She is now a finalist for the Gatorade national player of the year award, which will be announced later this month.
