The University of Charleston announced the hiring of five coaches to lead UC-Beckley's newly founded athletic teams for the 2013-14 academic year.Lisa Lee will lead UC-B's women's basketball program. Lee, a first-team All-America selection while playing for the University of Charleston, played six seasons as a professional in Europe before coming back to West Virginia to start her coaching career.The men's basketball team will be under the direction of Daniel Mitchell, who played his college career at Division I Radford before joining Mark Downey's UC coaching staff last season.Kelsey Eby will lead the women's volleyball program. The men's soccer program will be guided by Ryan Osborne and Sabrina Mullaney will coach the women's soccer team.
nnBOYS BASKETBALL: The inaugural Big 10-Cardinal Conference Challenge will take place Dec. 20-21 at the Charleston Civic Center.The nine Class AA schools of the Big 10 Conference (Class AAA Elkins, Preston, Buckhannon-Upshur, and Lewis County are also in it) will take on all eight Cardinal Conference schools with Charleston Catholic filling the ninth slot.The event will start on Friday and culminate with a pair of games between the leagues' top seeds on Saturday. Poca and Robert C. Byrd got the No. 1 seeds and will play at 8:15 p.m. while No. 2s Fairmont Senior and Scott will meet at 6:45 p.m. (Full schedule, Page 2B.) nnWVU SWIMMING: Senior Rachael Burnett earned her fifth career All-America honorable mention in the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. Burnett finished 16th overall in the 500-meter freestyle in a time of 4:41.91. In the prelims, Burnett finished 15th with a time of 4:41.13. nnHOOPS TOURNEY: Parkersburg South and Parkersburg high schools will host the North American Youth Sports basketball tournament April 12-14. The tournament is for boys and girls teams, with numerous divisions (5th-6th grade, 7th, 8th, 9th-10th and 11th-12th). The entry fee is $110 and the deadline is March 29.
