Austin Harless fired one-hit ball over five innings as St. Albans blanked Capital 8-0 Wednesday in high school baseball.
Harless walked two, struck out two and enjoyed error-free defense behind him. Anthony Gavin's single in the third was Capital's only offense, and Joey Dodrill entered in the sixth and finished the shutout.
Josh Burkes and Bobby Grishaber knocked in two runs for SA (9-3) while Phoenix Shrewsbury went 2 for 4 and Harless and Taylor Braley both doubled. Capital fell to 4-8.
HOOVER 12, CLAY 0: Cody Bowen threw two-hit ball over six innings and the undefeated Huskies scored five each in the fifth and sixth to end the game early.
Sean Craze and Scooter Farmer combined to go 5 of 7 with seven RBIs for the Huskies (13-0) while Corey Bird went 2 of 3 with two RBIs and Shaun Dotson went 3 for 4, knocking in one run.
Bowen improved to 3-0, striking out five.
CHARLESTON CATHOLIC 17, SISSONVILLE 5: Charleston Catholic plated nine runs in the second inning after falling behind 1-0 in the first. Rocco Wilcox went 3 for 4 with five RBIs and Drew Cable had two hits and two RBIs for the Class A No. 1 Fighting Irish, who amassed 16 hits. Zach Null went 2 for 3 and knocked in a run for the Indians.
VALLEY 7, BUFFALO 6: Druw Bowen struck out nine while Raeshawn Breckenridge had a double, a triple, a home run and five RBIs in Valley's win against visiting Buffalo.
Joseph Eckert and Drew Jones each had two hits for the Greyhounds (10-4). For Buffalo, Nick Gunter went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Michael Erwin added an RBI.
POCA 5, RIPLEY 4: Matt Chandler had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs as visiting Poca beat Ripley.
Noah Frampton added a 2-for-4 performance in the Dots' win. For Ripley, Trevor Tucker went 3 for 4 with a double.
GW 8, WINFIELD 5: Clayton Anderson had a home run, a double and six RBIs in George Washington's win against visiting Winfield.
Also for the Patriots (9-5), Tanner Sorrells went 2 for 2 with a double, Ty McClanahan had a double and Austin Griffith had two hits. For Winfield (7-8), Bear Bellomy had a triple and two RBIs.
POINT PLEASANT 17, ROANE 5: Alex Somerville went 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs while Austen Toler had a double and two RBIs in Point Pleasant's win at Roane County.
Bruce McDermitt added three hits and three RBIs for the Big Blacks (8-6). For Roane (1-7), Justin Copley went 3 for 3 with a double and a triple.
EASTERN 9, WAHAMA 4: Joey Scowden went 2 for 3 with five RBIs to pace Eastern (Ohio) in its win at Wahama. For the White Falcons (3-4), Wyatt Zuspan went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Wesley Harrison had a double and two RBIs.
LINCOLN COUNTY 8, SPRING VALLEY 4: Lincoln County strung together five singles in the fifth inning, scoring three times en route to a victory at Spring Valley.
The big inning gave the Panthers a 6-4 lead. From there, Faith Huffman kept the Timberwolves scoreless.
Huffman also hit a home run and knocked in two runs and Megan Tully and Brooke West had two hits apiece. For Spring Valley, Brooke Jackson and Cassie Adkins doubled, with Adkins knocking in two runs.
GW 8, RIVERSIDE 6: Rachel Ward belted a three-run homer in the second inning, giving George Washington a lead that stood up. Ward went 3 for 4 and Bailey Rabel went 2 for 4 with an RBI for GW (4-7). For Riverside, Sara Winter went 3 of 4 with two RBIs and Felicia Burton was 3 for 4 with a double.
SC 7, NITRO 0: South Charleston pitcher Allie Burdette struck out 16 Nitro batters and allowed just one hit as the Black Eagles shut out the visiting Wildcats. For South Charleston (7-6), Meredith Cain went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs while Emily Bostic went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
SHERMAN 10, VAN 0: Kylie Wells allowed one hit and the Sherman offense exploded for nine runs in the second as the Tide won in three innings.
Baylee Harless had a double and an RBI, Jordan Lewis had a double and two RBIs and Demi Jarrell went 2 for 2 with an RBI for Sherman (10-4).
HURRICANE 12, WINFIELD 2: Cassi Sargent went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Linzie Reynolds had a triple and two RBIs in the Redskins' win against visiting Winfield. Ally Funk had Winfield's only RBI.
HURRICANE 15, MIDLAND 13: Hurricane outslugged visiting Cabell Midland, scoring six runs in the sixth inning to push ahead of the Knights for good. Madison Casto went 4 for 5 and Emily Davis went 2 for 4 with two doubles for the Redskins. Jenny Brumfield and Savannah Eplin each went 3 for 5 for Midland.
MANN MEMORIAL: Roane County's Kyle Raines set a school record by clearing 13 feet, 7 inches in the boys pole vault during Tuesday's Lindsey Mann Memorial in Spencer. The Raiders won the boys meet, besting a seven-team field, and Gilmer County took the girls meet. (See results, Page 2B.)
