CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Hurricane didn't produce many winners, but its depth paid off in winning the boys division of the Capital City Classic high school track meet Friday night at Laidley Field.The Redskins amassed 121 points to outdistance runner-up Buckhannon-Upshur's 91. George Washington (88 points), Capital (85) and Preston (71) rounded out the top five. (See Page 2B for results.)Nathan Wendel won the only individual event for Hurricane, capturing the long jump with an effort of 19 feet, 11/2 inches. The Redskins also took the 4x400-meter and shuttle hurdles relay events. GW's Matt Brafford won the 1,600 and 3,200 runs while B-U's Isaac Johnson was victorious in the shot put and discus.On the girls side, Emily Godwin showed up, and that meant another 40-point night as her Buckhannon-Upshur team pulled away from the field. The Buccaneers outpointed second-place Hurricane 176-121.
Godwin took the 400-meter run (1 minute, 0.39 seconds), the 100 hurdles (15.09), the high jump (5-6) and long jump (16-2). She has a state top-10 performance in seven different events this spring.But the Buccaneers also spread the wealth, going 1-2-3 in the 100 hurdles and the discus. They won eight events in all.Hurricane received wins from Taneisha Sturdavent in the 100, Joie Johnston in the 800 and Lauren London in the pole vault, plus the Redskins won three relays. Capital's Peyton Panger swept the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.
