Area roundup: UC splits baseball doubleheader against West Liberty

The University of Charleston baseball team split a doubleheader with host West Liberty Tuesday, wining game one 5-4 and losing the second 9-3.In the first game, UC scored five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good thanks in part to an Igor Molina grand slam. Jake Ciolfi earned the win for UC while Corey Lakatos picked up the save.In the second contest, West Liberty scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings as the Hilltoppers cruised to the win. Andrew Henry went 2 for 3 with a triple and drove home four runs for West Liberty while Drew Peterson picked up the complete-game win, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out three. Patrick Chiaramonte was tabbed with the loss for UC (17-23).

  • STATE BASEBALL: Shepherd pounded out 28 hits and 22 runs on the day as the Rams produced a West Virginia Conference sweep over West Virginia State, winning 10-1 and 12-2 Tuesday in Shepherd. Michael Lott went 4 for 5 with three doubles, four RBIs and a run scored to lead the Rams while pitcher Paul Hvozdovic (9-5) picked up the win. Garrett Kiser led the Yellow Jackets with a pair of hits.West Virginia State (24-18, 21-8 WVC) took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap, but Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the frame with four runs and added two runs over the next four innings for the sweep.Chad Murphy had a 3-for-3 effort with three RBIs to lead the Rams (24-18, 20-8). Andrew Pickering had an RBI double and Bill Smith had an RBI single for State. Shepherd's Davis Hall (7-2) earned the win while Yellow Jacket starter Jesus Rivero took the loss.

  • STATE SOFTBALL SWEEPS: West Virginia State earned a pair of victories, 7-1 and 6-2, over Concord at Athens Tuesday.West Virginia State (28-11, 13-5 WVC) got off to a hot start with five runs in the first inning in game one, including four on a grand slam by Ashley Weyant. Sabrina Schouten also added three hits for State. Jessica Seymour went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Concord (18-27, 6-14).Weyant struck again for the Yellow Jackets in game two with a solo home run to break a scoreless tie in the fifth inning while Schouten posted three more hits. Two Concord errors led to four more runs for State in the sixth inning to break the game open at 5-0. Seymour had three hits and a stolen base for the Mountain Lions in game two.

  • HERD GOLF: Nathan Kerns carded a 68, the lowest final-round score of the 60-player field, to help the Marshall men's golf team finish in fifth place at the Conference-USA championships.

  • LOCAL SWIMMING: Nitro's Luke Carpenter signed a national letter of intent to attend Davis & Elkins College. Carpenter placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in the 2012 high school state championships for the Wildcats.

  • LOCAL GOLF: Jonathan Clark of Sleepy Hollow Golf Club finished fourth with a 72 in the low professional event of the Las Vegas Palute Golf Resort Pro-3 Amateur Tuesday at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport. Kevin Shields of The Club at Nevillewood finished first, shooting a 67.
  • Craig Berner of Edgewood County Club scored a second-place finish after shooting a 69 Monday in the low professional event of the Las Vegas Palute Golf Resort Pro-3 Amateur at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport. John Abner of Allegheny Country Club took the top spot with a 66.

  • CORRECTION: The West Virginia Power is on the road playing a three-game series with Charleston (S.C.) and will travel to Savannah (Ga.) to begin a four-game set with the SandGnats. The Power's next home game will be May 1.
