Prep roundup: Fast start carries Hoover past Wayne

Austin Thomas clouted a two-run home run to highlight a six-run first inning as host Herbert Hoover downed Wayne 13-2 in five innings.The Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 edge, but it was short-lived as the Huskies erupted for six in the bottom of the frame.Thomas finished 2 for 2 with three RBIs while Sean Craze rapped out three hits and drove in four runs and Ryan Shamblin had two hits and two RBIs for the Huskies (21-1), who pounded out 15 hits. Zack Cassidy went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for Wayne.
  • RIVERSIDE 4, WINFIELD 3: Aaron Halstead's run-scoring double down the left-field line gave the host Warriors the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Riverside's Tyler Hall then struck out the side in the top of the seventh to preserve the win. Hall fanned 12 and scattered five singles in the complete-game effort.Brady Wilkinson went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Warriors (9-12). Brandon Wright had two hits for the Generals and Bear Bellomy drove in a run.
  • SOUTH 8, SC 4: Jordan Braniff drove in two runs to lead visiting Parkersburg South past South Charleston. Jacob Wilcox went 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Patriots while Wes Mitchem allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in a complete-game effort.
  • Jonathan Pauley knocked in a pair of runs for the Black Eagles and Jacob Marler banged out three hits and drove in a run.
  • BUFFALO 4, WIRT COUNTY 0: Beau Whittington struck out eight in a complete-game four-hit shutout.
  • Aaron Lewis doubled in a pair of runs in the first to provide all the support Whittington would need. Michael Erwin went 2 for 3 and Dakota Briscoe doubled for the Bison (7-10).For Wirt County, Austin Cottrell went 2 for 3 with a double.
  • CROSS LANES 8, GRACE 6: Ethan Stepp and Chad Williams each drove in a run as host Cross Lanes Christian (7-8) held off Grace Christian.

  • LINCOLN CO. 4, TUG VALLEY 3: Grant Bates and Forrest Campbel each knocked in a run for Lincoln County. David Runyon knocked in three runs for the Panthers.

  • ST. ALBANS 7, NITRO 1: Red Dragons seniors Ali Haynes and Mariah Caudill earned their 100th career victory with a win over the Wildcats.
  • Caudill provided the offense, going 3 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBIs for St. Albans (21-4), while Alyssa Bonham tripled and drove in a pair of runs.
  • RIVERSIDE 4, NICHOLAS 3: Freshman Chelsea Diegert tripled in the winning run in the top of the eighth with two outs to propel the visiting Warriors.
