CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Seton Hill swept the special awards Wednesday as the All-West Virginia Conference baseball teams were released.The Griffins' Nick Sell was named the conference player of the year while teammate Alex Haines was voted the pitcher of the year and Seton Hill's Marc Marizzaldi garnered coach of the year honors as voted on by the league's coaches.West Virginia State's Jordan Butcher, a former Logan High School standout, and Jack Hudson, a former South Charleston star, earned all-WVC first-team selections as a starting pitcher and designated hitter, respectively.
The Yellow Jackets' Tyler Thompson of Athens, Ohio, and Tyler Payne of Hurricane were named to the second team as a starting pitcher and catcher, respectively. State's Andrew Pickering of Cross Lanes and Noah Blackhurst of Hurricane garnered honorable mention, as did the University of Charleston's Igor Molina.
Sell, a first-team all-conference selection a year ago, leads Division II with a .466 batting average. He has driven in 46 runs, scored 57 times and carries a .761 slugging percentage and .551 on-base percentage. Among Sell's 76 hits, 26 have gone for extra bases.Haines, the reigning WVC pitcher of the year, turned in a 6-2 record with a 2.81 earned run average in 572/3 innings with 68 strikeouts. He has four complete games and held opponents to a .245 batting average.Marizzaldi guided Seton Hill to a 26-8 mark in the league with a power rating of 191.47 while claiming the North Division title. The Griffins currently own a 37-13 overall record and are ranked at the top of the region and are nationally ranked.
