Area roundup: MU women's hoops signs two JC recruits

Marshall's women's basketball team added a pair of guards to its 2013-2014 roster as junior college transfers Aja Sorrells and Andrea Johnson signed national letters of intent this past week.Sorrrells led Hutchinson Community College to two straight Final Four appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.Johnson led Northeast Community College to the NJCAA tournament, leading the team with 11.4 points per game.

  • WVU TRACK:  West Virginia University had 19 student-athletes named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 track and field first and second teams. Senior Aubrey Moskal and sophomore Kelly Williams were two of the 10 student-athletes to earn a perfect 4.0 GPA and a spot on the first team. Other first-team members were Sarah-Anne Brault, Sydney Cummings, Kiley Defibaugh, Jordan Hamric, Alex Klauke, Lauren Moskal, Allison Pettit, Hallie Portner, Alanna Pritts and Alllison Tyree.

  • CONCORD SPORTS: Concord head football coach Garin Justice named defensive line coach Pat Dawson the team's recruiting coordinator for 2013. Dawson is entering his third season as a member on the Mountain Lions' staff.
  • Concord baseball's Ryan Johnston was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District first team. The sophomore third baseman has a 3.61 GPA entering the spring semester. A business major, Johnston adds the academic distinction to a second-team All-West Virginnia Conference selection.

  • AREA BOWLING: Galaxy Lanes has scheduled the Pepsi/C. Adam Toney Tire Spring Classics singles tournament for Saturday, at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Squads are limited to the first 66 entries, with $1,200 guaranteed for first place. Entry fee is $65.

  • LOCAL TENNIS: The Charleston Family YWCA will host the 24th annual U.S. Professional Tennis Association's "Tennis Across America" children's clinic today from 3:30-5:15 p.m. The clinic is free and will be conducted by professionals and community volunteers.
