Prep roundup: Parkins leads Buffalo to softball sectional title
Chelsey Parkins fired a no-hitter and also went 4 for 4 Thursday night to spark Buffalo to a 15-0 win over visiting Charleston Catholic and the Class A Region 4 Section 4 softball title.Two-time defending state champion Buffalo (29-4) advances to the Region 4 semifinals and will play at Wahama at 6 p.m. Thursday.Also for the Bison, Ali Burdette went 3 for 3 with a home run and Katie Higginbotham and Amanda Christy both delivered a pair of hits.
RIPLEY 4, RIVERSIDE 0: Chelsey Hager scattered six hits as Ripley downed host Riverside in a Class AAA Region 3 Section 4 contest. Kelsey Moore had two hits for the Vikings while Miranda Murphy drove home a pair of runs. Destinae Schmidt had two hits for the Warriors (19-15). Riverside will host Ripley again tonight at 6.
SA SWEEPS: Mariah Caudill went 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs to pace St. Albans to a 14-7 victory over Logan in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader and clinch the AAA Region 4 Section 2 championship.
Caudill went 4 for 4 with two doubles, a homer and five RBIs as the Red Dragons downed the Wildcats 15-6 in the opener. SA (27-4) plays at Point Pleasant in the Region 4 semifinals May 9.Maddie Marshall pounded out three hits and drove in three runs for SA in the first game. NITRO 4, RIVERSIDE 0: Jacob Bradley struck out seven in a three-hitter as Nitro earned a win at home. Ryan McDonough went 3 for 3 with a double to lead the offense for the Wildcats (19-10) while Ethan Clark and Jacob Williams had a pair of hits each.
HURRICANE 3, SPRING VALLEY 1: Alex White went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs as Hurricane secured a home win. Ace Estep added two hits, including a double, for the Redskins (22-4). Colby Webb had a double for the Timberwolves.
GW 5, LOGAN 4: Garrett Vogelbach went 2 for 4 with a double as George Washington escaped with a road win over Logan.
Tanner Sorrells and Austin Griffith produced two hits each for the Patriots (19-10). Zach Minnick had two hits for the Wildcats (18-8).
SCOTT 9, SC 2: Forrest Spurlock went 3 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs as Scott cruised to a win over host South Charleston. Devin Bayer posted two hits including a double for the Skyhawks. Zach Wright added a hit and drove home a run for the Black Eagles.
RIPLEY 12, HOOVER 3: Tyler Pittenger exploded for four hits, including a pair of doubles, as Ripley bested visiting Herbert Hoover. Trevor Tucker and Christopher Jordan both added two hits apiece for the Vikings. Austin Thomas went 2 for 3 for the Huskies.
POINT 11, BUFFALO 1: Tylun Campbell went 2 for 3 with a grand slam and drove home five runs as Point Pleasant won at home. Nathan Chapman also contributed two hits for the Big Blacks (10-10). Nick Gunter had two hits for Buffalo.
RAVENSWOOD 6, WIRT 2: Logan Jarrett belted four hits including a double as Ravenswood earned a home win. Devon Crews added a home run and two RBIs for the Red Devils while Nick Ballard had two hits. Wesley Valentine recorded a double and an RBI for Wirt County.
CROSS LANES 15, WOOD COUNTY 6: Christian Kennedy fired a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts for visiting Cross Lanes Christian (9-10), and four players rapped out two hits apiece - Lee McQuain, Chad Williams, Ethan Stepp and James Jeffrey.
POINT 9, HUNTINGTON 6: Evan Potter went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as Point Pleasant (9-10) earned a road win. Stephen Holland and Ben Gibson had two hits apiece for Huntington (20-10).
