Marshall's baseball team dropped a Conference USA doubleheader to Memphis, losing 1-0 and 9-6 Saturday at FedEx Park in Memphis, Tenn.In game one, Herd starting pitcher Aaron Blair allowed just three hits over 81/3 innings but was dealt the loss when Memphis put an end to his shutout in the bottom of the ninth when the winning run scored from third on a wild pitch. Isaac Ballou finished 2 for 4 as the Marshall offense struggled to produce only five hits.In the second game, Marshall (18-28, 5-12 C-USA) struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Memphis put two across in the bottom half followed by three runs in the fifth inning, which was followed by a two-hour and 27-minute rain delay. When play resumed, the Tigers added three runs in the sixth.Nathan Gomez was 2 for 4 in the contest for Marshall while Aaron Bossi also contributed two hits. Marshall starter Wayland Moore suffered the loss, lasting only two innings, giving up three runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
nnHERD SOFTBALL: The Marshall softball team split a doubleheader with UTEP Saturday, losing 6-4 and winning 4-2 in Huntington.Senior Ashley Gue was a combined 3 for 6 for the Herd (31-20, 12-10 Conference USA), while teammate Shaelynn Braxton went 3 for 7.Marshall's Andi Williamson pitched two complete games, earning her 28th victory - a Marshall record. nnHERD TRACK: Marshall's Amanda Hottenstein and Amanda Kennedy won their events Friday at the Ohio Open in Athens, Ohio.Hottenstein placed first in the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 50.18 meters while Kennedy finished first in the shot put with a toss of 38.78 meters. Hottenstein also placed third in the shot put with a throw of 12.77 meters. nnWVU TRACK: With a personal-best throw of 56.96 meters, West Virginia's Heather Adams broke a school record in the hammer throw Friday at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Waco, Texas. Adams finished fifth in the competition. Also scoring for WVU was Katlyn Shelar, who finished eighth in the pole vault, clearing 3.76 meters. nnWVU FAN CLUB: West Virginia baseball coach Randy Mazey will be the guest speaker at the Kanawha Valley WVU Fan Club meeting at 8 p.m. Thursday at Harding's Restaurant in Mink Shoals.
nnLOCAL TRACK: Due to a scheduling conflict, the 27th annual Capital City Striders Invitational age group competition will not be held this year and will be rescheduled for June 13-14, 2014. The Striders will still host the West Virginia AAU District Qualifier on May 25 and the All Ages Championship on June 1.
