Prep baseball roundup: Catholic shuts out Buffalo, seeks clincher today
Andy Hoyer and Rocco Wilcox combined to scatter three hits and strike out 11 as Charleston Catholic blanked 9-0 Buffalo in a Class A Region 4 Section 4 prep baseball contest Thursday at Triana Field.
Thad Jameson paced the Fighting Irish (23-9) with two hits and four RBIs while Hoyer and Sam McKown each added two hits. Laythen Good went 2 for 3 with a double for the Bison (11-13).
The teams play again at 4:30 p.m. today at Triana Field as the Irish attempt to wrap up the sectional crown.
Jacob Marler picked up the win with five innings of one-hit relief for the Black Eagles (15-12), who visit George Washington today in an attempt to wrap up the title. SC overcame four errors.
For the Patriots (20-11), Tanner Sorrells went 2 for 3 and drove in a run. GW led 4-1 after four innings.
Dawson also produced at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs for the Redskins (25-4) while Tate Brock had three hits and drove home five runs.
Hurricane hosts the winner of Spring Valley-Cabell Midland on May 20 at 6 p.m. in the regional semifinals. Lincoln County finishes the season 9-11.
Josh Bumgarner drove in Jonah Sneeringer in the bottom of the fourth for the tie-breaking and eventual winning run. Gage Buskirk went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for the Big Blacks.
Winfield hosts the winner of Region 4 Section 2 on May 20 in the regional semifinals.
Corey Bird, Cody Bowen and Hunter White each had two hits for the Huskies (25-3). Ethan Smith went 3 for 4 for the Panthers and Dalton Holcomb had a hit and drove home three runs.
Herbert Hoover will play Nicholas County at 5 tonight at Clay County.
Null was equally as impressive on the mound, limiting the visiting Dots to just four hits over seven innings. The second game in the best-of-three series is tonight at 6:30 at Sissonville.
J.R. Stricklen, Houston Hill and Dominic Walker each had two hits for the Indians (12-21). Brett Watts drove in a run for Poca, the No. 5 team in AA.
Cameron Norris went 1 for 2 with a pair of RBIs for Riverside (10-15) and Tyler Hall went the distance on the mound to earn the victory. Losing pitcher Jacob Williams had two hits with a double for Capital.
Riverside will host Ripley at 6:30 tonight to continue sectional play.
In the opener, McGinnis struck out 15 and went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Bowen blasted a homer and drove in three.
In the second game, Bowen fired a five-hit shutout and fanned 12.
Also in the second game, Valley (20-7) got a two-run inside-the-park-homer from Bowen. Jacob Barnett went 2 for 4 with a double for the Tide.
Brown finished with three hits for the Skyhawks (17-14) and Forrest Spurlock had a home run and two RBIs. William Copley, Tristan Thompson and Brent Bigley had two hits apiece for the Tigers (21-8).
The teams play again at 5 tonight in Chapmanville.
Wahama (15-11) hosts Calhoun County at 5:30 p.m. today. Hannan (7-15) is eliminated.
