Prep baseball roundup: Catholic shuts out Buffalo, seeks clincher today

Andy Hoyer and Rocco Wilcox combined to scatter three hits and strike out 11 as Charleston Catholic blanked 9-0 Buffalo in a Class A Region 4 Section 4 prep baseball contest Thursday at Triana Field.Thad Jameson paced the Fighting Irish (23-9) with two hits and four RBIs while Hoyer and Sam McKown each added two hits. Laythen Good went 2 for 3 with a double for the Bison (11-13).The teams play again at 4:30 p.m. today at Triana Field as the Irish attempt to wrap up the sectional crown.
  • SC 6, GW 4: Jonathan Cline, Antonio Brown and Jerod Jobst each provided two hits and host South Charleston put together a five-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to secure a win in the opening game of Class AAA Region 3 Section 3.
  • Jacob Marler picked up the win with five innings of one-hit relief for the Black Eagles (15-12), who visit George Washington today in an attempt to wrap up the title. SC overcame four errors.For the Patriots (20-11), Tanner Sorrells went 2 for 3 and drove in a run. GW led 4-1 after four innings.
  • HURRICANE 17, LINCOLN COUNTY 0: J.T. Rogoszewski and Trey Dawson combined on a no-hitter as Hurricane claimed the AAA Region 4 Section 3 title with a home win.
  • Dawson also produced at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs for the Redskins (25-4) while Tate Brock had three hits and drove home five runs.Hurricane hosts the winner of Spring Valley-Cabell Midland on May 20 at 6 p.m. in the regional semifinals. Lincoln County finishes the season 9-11.
  • WINFIELD 3, POINT 2: Jordan Clark and Tanner Bailey had two hits apiece to lead Winfield to the Class AAA Region 4 Section 1 title win over visiting Point Pleasant (18-14).
  • Josh Bumgarner drove in Jonah Sneeringer in the bottom of the fourth for the tie-breaking and eventual winning run. Gage Buskirk went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for the Big Blacks.Winfield hosts the winner of Region 4 Section 2 on May 20 in the regional semifinals.
  • HOOVER 8, CLAY 5: Austin Thomas went 3 for 4 with an RBI as Herbert Hoover scored a Class AA Region 4 Section 1 win over host Clay County.
  • Corey Bird, Cody Bowen and Hunter White each had two hits for the Huskies (25-3). Ethan Smith went 3 for 4 for the Panthers and Dalton Holcomb had a hit and drove home three runs.
    Herbert Hoover will play Nicholas County at 5 tonight at Clay County.
  • SISSONVILLE 6, POCA 2: Zach Null went 3 for 4 with a home run, double and four RBIs as the Indians opened the Class AA Region 4 Section 2 tournament with a win over state-ranked Poca (23-8).
  • Null was equally as impressive on the mound, limiting the visiting Dots to just four hits over seven innings. The second game in the best-of-three series is tonight at 6:30 at Sissonville.J.R. Stricklen, Houston Hill and Dominic Walker each had two hits for the Indians (12-21). Brett Watts drove in a run for Poca, the No. 5 team in AA.
  • RIVERSIDE 3, CAPITAL 2: Riverside scored three times in the fifth inning as the host Warriors posted a Class AAA Region 3 Section 4 win.
  • Cameron Norris went 1 for 2 with a pair of RBIs for Riverside (10-15) and Tyler Hall went the distance on the mound to earn the victory. Losing pitcher Jacob Williams had two hits with a double for Capital.Riverside will host Ripley at 6:30 tonight to continue sectional play.
  • VALLEY SWEEPS: Arik McGinnis and Druw Bowen each delivered strong pitching efforts as the visiting Greyhounds captured the Class A Region 3 Section 3 title with an 11-3, 4-0 doubleheader sweep of Sherman.
  • In the opener, McGinnis struck out 15 and went 4 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Bowen blasted a homer and drove in three.In the second game, Bowen fired a five-hit shutout and fanned 12.Also in the second game, Valley (20-7) got a two-run inside-the-park-homer from Bowen. Jacob Barnett went 2 for 4 with a double for the Tide.
  • SCOTT 5, CHAPMANVILLE 4: Cody Brown hit a walk-off single to right on his 18th birthday as Scott picked up a AA Region 4 Section 3 win in Madison.
  • Brown finished with three hits for the Skyhawks (17-14) and Forrest Spurlock had a home run and two RBIs. William Copley, Tristan Thompson and Brent Bigley had two hits apiece for the Tigers (21-8).The teams play again at 5 tonight in Chapmanville.
  • WAHAMA 14, HANNAN 1: Demetrius Severicz went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Wahama, which led 14-0 after three innings before wrapping up a five-inning mercy-rule win in the Class A Region 4 Section 3 tournament.
  • Wahama (15-11) hosts Calhoun County at 5:30 p.m. today. Hannan (7-15) is eliminated.
