Prep baseball -- Logan eliminates Nitro from sectional
Josh Rein went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs as Logan downed visiting Nitro 5-2 Friday in Class AAA Region 4 Section 2 baseball.The loss eliminated the Wildcats (19-12) from the postseason and ended their run of six straight trips to the state tournament. Nitro won titles in 2008 and '10 and finished as state runner-up in 2009 and '12.Troy Burgess produced two hits for Logan (19-8), the co-No. 10 team in the state ratings, and Zach Minnick added a hit and drove home two runs.Ryan McDonough and Matt Harrison had two hits apiece for Nitro. Logan hosts St. Albans today at 3 in the sectional championship round. SA has one loss in the double-elimination event and the Wildcats none, so a Logan win today would wrap up the crown.
MAN 16, TUG VALLEY 1: Kenneth Adkins went 2 for 2 and drove home a run as Man claimed the Class A Region 3 Section 4 title over host Tug Valley. Braden Griffin added a hit and three RBIs for the Hillbillies. Tyler Lucas batted 1 for 3 with an RBI for the Panthers. Man will travel to play Valley in the Region 4 semifinal on May 21 at 5:30 p.m.
MAN 7, TUG VALLEY 1: Braden Griffin went 3 for 3 with a double and triple and Cody Carter drove in two runs and tossed a complete game four-hitter for the host Hillbillies (5-21) in the opening game of Class A Region 3 Section 4. Cayce Mullins also drove in a pair for Man. Phillip Lucas had the RBI for the Panthers (8-12).
