Seven players from the Kanawha Valley were selected for the 21st North-South All-Star softball games, which will take place Thursday in Buffalo.Ali Haynes and Mariah Caudill of St. Albans; Nicole Pierson and Linzie Reynolds of Hurricane; Alli Burdette of South Charleston; Rachel Ward of George Washington; and Bekah Baldwin of Sissonville will play for the South, which will be coached by SA's Greg Garber.Sherman's Mackenzie Smith; Scott's Allyson Johnson; Lincoln County's Morgan Hutchison and Amanda Salmons; Wayne's Jessica Watts; Man's Summer Sword; Chapmanville's Talya Berry and Hannah Wooten; Cabell Midland's Morgan Zerkle, Morgan Kelley and Jenny Brumfield; and Point Pleasant's Megan Davis will also play for the South.Haynes, Caudill, Smith, Johnson, Hutchison, Burdette, Watts, Reynolds, Sword, Zerkle and Kelley were first-team all-state selections this past season. Pierson and Reynolds led the Redskins to their first Class AAA state championship while Watts helped Wayne to its second straight in AA.Morgantown's Tara Hanson and Robert C. Byrd's Mecca Henderson, both all-state first-team selections, and Bridgeport's Tori Rovello and Gilmer County's Tiffany Young, who were second-team all-state picks, highlights the North roster, which will be led by University's Barb Solly.
(See Page 2B for rosters.)There will be two seven-inning games followed by one five-inning contest at 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 and children under 12 are admitted free.The individual player contests begin at 10:30 a.m. with the home-run derby, fastest arm (over and underhand), 20- and 60-yard sprints, accuracy throw and bunting.There will be awards given to a most valuable from each team for each game, and to contest winners.The South leads the all-time series, which began in 1993, 25-21. The South won two out of three last year by scores of 4-1 and 6-2 while the North owned a 12-2 victory.
