Roundup: Mountain East Conference officially welcomes 12 charter members
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Mountain East Conference officially welcomed its 12 charter members of the newest NCAA Division II league Monday.
"While we are still more than a month away from when action begins in the Mountain East Conference, we are very excited that our 12 members are moving forward as members of the MEC," said league commissioner Reid Amos.
The new league's charter members are Concord, Fairmont State, Glenville State, Notre Dame College (Ohio), Shepherd, University of Charleston, The University of Virginia's College at Wise (Va.), Urbana University (Ohio), West Liberty, West Virginia State, Wheeling Jesuit and West Virginia Wesleyan.
HYCAT SWIMMING: Huntington YMCA Charleston Aquatic Swim Club announced Monday the hiring of Chris Rogers as competitive team head coach.
Rogers will begin his duties in August and will also begin transition to HYCAT director of swimming operations, duties he will assume on March 1, 2014.
Rogers is a 2010 graduate of the College of Charleston and was a four-year varsity swimmer. The Aiken, S.C., native held school records in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and was a Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association all-conference selection in both events. Rogers was also part of two CCSA team conference championships.
POWER MOVES: The West Virginia Power promoted pitcher Pat Ludwig to Bradenton (Fla.) and added pitcher John Kuchno from Jamestown (Pa.).
GOLF TOURNAMENT: The 41st annual Riverside Golf Tournament will be held July 13-14 at Riverside Golf Club in Mason. The cost is $80 and the entry deadline is July 9.
